While moving the wife"s washer last night (to get ready to lay tile) I noticed a pool of oil beneath it----very disappointing, to say the least!
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else out there has come across this type problem, and whether it"s "fixable", or should I start looking for a new washer. I realize that most appliances these days are throw aways, but, if this is a repairable item, I"d be willing to try.
Any help/opinions are appreciated!

I delivered and installed whirlpool washers and dryers for four years at Lowe's. I have found that between the hassle and expense of getting it repaired, yu are better off buying new.

Yesterday a 'money man' on the radio said a washer/dryer are not worth fixing if they are over four years old. He undoubtedly was talking about the average homeowner who cannot fix his own appliances. He also said something to the effect that paying more than $200 for a new one is a waste of money for most homeowners. Maybe he was talking about a washboard and a tub. A couple of years ago we had a leaky dishwasher that the serviceman said was not worth fixing. He said a seal was leaking and the tub was rusted. We bought a new one and I took the old one apart for the cabinet, it's a rollaway, and all I found was a dripping hose because of a loose clamp. The tub was not rusted one bit.If you have the patience to fix it yourself, go for it. It doesn't hurt to explore. Jim

We had a washer that was leaking(about 12 years old) repair man said it wasn"t worth fixing. Just bought a Whirlpool front loader. Paid $999. super machine my wife just washed a king size comforter which she can"t wash in old washer(too big). Really come out quite dry. Now only takes about have the time to dry in older dryer. they claim you can save about $90 a year in energy costs. Highly recommend to anyone.

From somebody else who lives in the woods... LOL

We (the wife) recently decided to not repair our old washer (bought used almost 20 yrs ago and finally wore out the splines on the agitator shaft). After digging around the internet a bit we ended up with a Fisher&Paykel, which I'd never heard of. From New Zealand. Has the efficiency of a front loader, but isn't, and has no transmission at all.

IIRC, $600 from Lowe's or anybody else. There really is a difference. We found it well worth the money.

Take a look at the Appliance Repair Clinic website. They give helpful instructions and troubleshooting tips as well as they sell repair parts. I have used them a few times and their prices are about the best that you will get.

My guess is that this is an old unit and in the end it may not be worth the repair. Whirlpool makes a number of models for various outlets under a bunch of different names. it may pay to shop around a bit and see if you can get a scratch/dent or close-out model. I find lowes and sears to have some deal on something almost any time that I go in the store. Whirpool was selling demos and odd-lot machines on their store on ebay a while ago and you may want to look there. They also have a factory outlet store in Benton Harbor, MI if you ever get that way.

Best of luck with whatever route you choose.

Oil around the bottom of the washer and pooling up on the floor indicates transmission leaking. Could be seals on the shaft or gasket at the split line of the housing. Fixable, but considering age and condition of washer will be the denominating factor. Maybe 150-175.00 to fix.
