Are there any good car mechanics out there?
What would make a car steering, steer with power steering one way, but not the other? Any help would be good. Thanks

I worked on an '83 Olds Cutlass (Front wheel drive 4 Cyl.) that had that problem. When I went to get a rebuilt rack and pinion unit for it I was told that nearly all of them gave this trouble. I was also told that the rebuilt units were much improved over the original equipment. The rebuilt unit worked MUCH BETTER than the original unit ever did and never gave any trouble. Just one isolated example, hope this helps, Gordon in IN

The problem lies in the steering gear, the spool valves are either stuck or leaking badly, have seen it happen in extreme high mileage cars. I'd look for another steering gear. Haven't seen it happen in a rack and pinion yet, but don't see why it wouldn't eventually. Either way, replace the gear, or the rack. You can have the gear rebuilt in most cases, but if it is this worn, the parts cost would be high. Plus likelihood of a pressure leak is pretty large. Sorry don't see any permanent quick fixes here.
