Anyone got a definite answer on how many bushels of shelled corn will go in a 55 gallon drum? Also, is there a difference between a drum and a barrel? I've heard both words used interchangably. Thanks.

It should hold between 335-350lbs. This would be in a metal 55 gallon barrel, depending on how full it is.

Measure your "55" gallon drum. I will bet it is a letttle bit bigger. At the plant mine are 62 gallons to allow 55 gallons of product and ullage or room for expansion.

A drum is 55 gals. and barrel is 42 gal. A barrel of crude oil is 42 gals. and drum of oil is 55 gals.

Aero has it right. There is 0.13368 cubic feet in 1 gallon. Therefore, 55gal X 0.13368 = 7.35 cubic feet in a 55 gallon drum. There is 0.80 bushels in a cubic foot, so 7.35 cubic feet X 0.80 bushels/cubic foot = 5.88 bushels in a 55 gal drum. If you want it in pounds, you will need to know the bushel weight of the corn. For standard 56#/bu corn, it would be 329.28#.

Don`t in depend on if it`s shelled or on the cob? What about pop corn: popped or unpopped?

Sorry, you guys were getting too close to agreeing on an answer.

Sure it does. That's why my question was about shelled corn!

Here in the feed mill I usually put 300# in a 55 gallon barrel, so 5.35 bushel. It will hold more, but you have to move it.

There are 8 gallons in one bushel. 6.88 bushels in a 55 gallon barrel or drum.

Level full a 55 gallon barrel will hold 6 7/8 bushel of corn. It lacks one gallon of holding 7 bushel, in other words.

I think you meant 5 7/8 bushel. I least that's what my calculator gets.

8 gallons to a bushel. 6 bushel would be 48 gallons. Seven gallons left over. My calculator shows 6.875 when dividing 55 by 8.

Apparently a gallon of corn takes up more space than a normal gallon so my computations are wrong. I just assumed a gallon was a gallon no matter what. I guess you a never too old to learn.

7.48 gallon per cubic foot. 1 1/4 cubic foot per bushel. 7.48 X 1 1/4 = 9.35. 55 divided by 9.35 = 5.88. OR 55 X 230.4 cu. in.(1 gal.) = 12672. 12872 divided by 1728(1 cu.ft.) = 7.33cu. ft.. 7.33 divided by 1 1/4 (1 1/4 cu. ft. per bushel) = 5.86.
