Here's one for all you experts. I have a old retractable steel measuring tape (10'). It is very sluggish and won't retract all the way, without me "pushing" the tape in by hand. I have taken it apart, cleaned it, and rewound the tape coil spring. It's still not better. I have a few of this old but quality tapes laying around with the same "symptoms". Any tricks to getting them working again? Thanks

What I do is pull the tape out a little further than where it retracts to when you have the case split. Keep your thumb on the center so it can't pop out and wind the excess tape around the tape that's in the case. Put it back together and it should go back in when you pull it out. If it doesn't, do it again. Watch out that spring doesn't pop out in your face. I have one that the spring end broke where it anchors in the center. It's a Stanley Leverlock that you squeeze the bottom to retract it. I wish I could find another one.

ive always soaked em up with PB Blaster, then wiped off all the excess of the tape while running it in and out a bunch, but it sounds like you did way more than this already. is the spring wound up tight enough?

I wound it up tight. It retracts fine except for last 2 feet. Thanks for reply. I enjoy reading and learning on this forum.
