Has anyone out there built their own auto hoist? I am talking about the kind that is free standing with four corner posts and two long ramps/decks that suport the vehicle. I believe they use a hydraulic/cable system to raise and lower the deck.

this hoist is on sale for around $2200. The sale price is on a mailer and I could not find the discounted price on the net. Thought you may want to compare the purchase price against your expected cost to build. I do not think that you can compete just building one.

I wouldn't think of building one myself unless you know a engineer to design it so it would be built right and with the right material. Those are my thoughts. When I see some of those down town, nobody can pay me enough to work under them jerking on some parts.

A good thing about the four post hoists is they don't require 6 to 10 inches of concrete floor, or a new floor. Transmission shops like four post hoists, cause they leave total access to the undercarriage. To buy one I'd look at gas station supply/hoists, pick up the car mags, they now carry ads for two and four post hoists, pretty reasonable too. Sometimes the big Kmart and such auto houses replace theirs and the hoist installer like to get rid of them quick cause they take up so much room. I have worked under one, two, and four post hoists for years, still here! But don't believe I don't think of the consequences now and then. The iron and welding involved in constructing your own? Buy it, life is too short. Think I'd rather buy a used parachute. John Ne.
