Cold Heat Soldering Guns...What do you know?

A friend gave me one of those "cold heat" soldering guns a few days ago. He broke the tip, and had already bought a new gun before he learned that replacement tips are available at Radio Shack.

So...anybody ever use one? Are they any good? What CAN and CAN'T you do with one? Is it worth my investing $9.98 = tax in a tip for this one, or will I be disappointed? My friend seems to like his pretty well, but that's just ONE opinion.

I have been an electronics technician for 35+ years, working on everything from pocket pagers, to tvs, to Motorola radios, vehicle elctrics, etc. When I worked serious on circuits I used a thermostat iron. Now that I only do soldering occasioanlly I have a 150 watt gun for bigger wires, and a butane iron for for small stuff. I bought one of the cold heat irons, and used it 2 or 3 times, then gave it away. It will only heat very small items, has to be held exactly so both halves of the tip contact the part to be soldered, and batteries have a very short life.

Yup they're junk.
The thing that pi$$es me off the most is that some chum got rich off the clever advertising campaign that the company put on TV. ~brad

I bought one and it is JUNK. I never did get anything soldered with it. Tried to solder some # 8 wire with it and it just self destructed.

I use mine for small jobs such as circuit boards. Don't like it for anything heavier.

Buddy of mine bought one of these, likes it pretty good, but I have never seen it work or tried it.

I have a Weller version... mine workes just fine on small stuff. I don't know if it's the same as the cold heat irons, but it is battery operated. Heats up quick and has done all the small tasks that I have asked it to do.

I have been soldering for almost 50 years now and I bought a cold heat iron (big mistake) and it broke before I could use it and it is a poor soldering iron. Get a real iron and don't waste your money.

Cr@p...

No.... Worse that cr@p. I solder almost every day.

I've found those units will only solder wire the size of a fine human hair.. won't touch most stuff bigger than 24.. let alone anything I might use on tractoring like 14..

I prefer a 15 watt electric pencil... or a 10w with fine tip for doing fine work.

If I'm doing mobile work, i have a butane powered pencil... can solder anything a 15watt electrif will do.. faster...

I've even used the old 'soldering iron' or 'copper' as they used to call them.. that and a propane torch..

I have one and like it although the tips are a little fragile. I broke mine a month or so ago and haven't gotten another tip for it yet but plan on it soon.
