I'm with casey on this...cut it down. Drill several one inch holes in the stump and fill with diesel fuel every couple of days for a month, then burn it out.

Guess I will blow your mind But having to fight with my cottonwoods that I inherited many years ago I tried many things even drilled holes in them and hammered in 1/2 copper pipe that I filled with roundup ,, but he best way is to cut the bark all the way around and band the tree.

Copper nails will not kill a Cotton Wood tree!

Banding a tree (removing a 3" band of bark from around the tree) would kill it but might take several years.

Girdeling the tree with wire might or might not work. I have seen trees stay alive for years when they were girdled and then a wind knocks them over.

Triclopyr acid would be your best thing to use. Drill holes around the tree trunk and pour the liguid in there several times to allow it to soak in.

Round Up (glyphosate) will also work with the hole method I described above or if its a small tree you could spray the foliage and kill it with either chemical.

I think the best thing to do would be to cut the tree down and then pour the Triclopyr acid over the fresh cut base to kill the stump and stop resprouting.

REAL old hardware store. Copper nails are used to put on slate roofs. Girddle the tree is a cheaper way to do it. Make sure you get down through all of the skin of the tree. jeffcat

can't you just cut it down and pull/grind or burn the stump out?

Have heard if you cut a 4-6 inch band of bark off the trunk of the tree maybe 2-3 feet from base, that will do the job. Maybe take a year but then you will have firewood that is tinder dry.
