I don't know how it goes in Indiana - but here in central New York - there are hand-hewn beams commonly available - usually free for the taking. There are many old barns falling apart - most built in the 1820s-1850s - and most beams are hand-hewn hemlock - but sometimes white oak or beech. I've got two barns that date to 1810 but that's rare. Siding is almost always hemlock. There are several companies looking to buy beams - but only from a complete building. They take the barn apart and label all the beams - and then usually resell the package as a complete historic building and put it back up somewhere. Just had one sell nearby for $6000. That including the clean-up and they also took the laid-up stone foundation along with the wood. Got another 1830 barn that the roof collapsed in - down the road from me. It has some nice hand-hewn beams - all free for the taking. It's all going to get burned soon.

Indiana barn beams were made of tulip tree lumber and Iowa barns were mostly walmut. Yes most leave a real dun heap. Hast makes waste on the pricing. Tong and grove beams and the hights without crane take down will lead to a big fall and $$$ to you for the ingury law suit.

I would also add; if the price doesn't take your breath away they are too cheap! Go to your local lumber yard and start checking the price of the veneer they make from those beams! Jeffcat

I don't know what the going rate is BUT, if the agreement includes a total clean-up of the structure , MAKE SURE that not one single board or beam leaves the site until the clean-up is complete. Several older farmers around here have been left with a real mess after the "buyers" took what they wanted then left for parts unknown.
