For the last couple of years, we've been smelling something dead at my buddy's hunting cabin down south of Millersburg, Ohio. We've torn both of the couches down, crawled around the crawl sapce, everything we can think of looking for the source. Sunday morning, I heard a crackle in the electric panel when the well pump kicked on. We took the cover off the panel and there was an 8" garter snake coiled dead up with his head on the main and tail on the ground buss. Juices from the snake have been corroding the buss bars.

When I was in the USMC we had a little kitchen off a large heavy equipment shop.We got a bad smell and tried everything to find out what it was.Even got prisoners from the brigg to clean behind counters and everywhere we could think of.About a year later I was on duty guarding the heavy junk when the stove stopped working.I wanted to heat some food so I pulled the back panel off to see what I could find.Aha heres a loose wire; pulled on it and realized I had just snapped the rear off a real dehydrated dead mouse fried on the control switch. In a confined space a dead, rotting rodent can make a toxic gas that can kill you.

I'm not that far from you up here in Wooster Ohio. Our phone junction box up the road is always getting full of mice or snakes makeing only our phone go out. Has happened about 3 years straight now.

If you are having a continual problem with mice in the telephone junction box, Have the telephone company plug any holes and add gravel to the box to a level about 5 inches above grade. Mice are a continual problem in some of our rual areas and we try to plug any type of entrance.

I'd advise turning off the power at the meter , cleaning up the buss bar if possible ( arching is dangerous), use dielectric grease on all contact areas & seal off all cracks around wire connectors with a good silicone caulk . They won't get in anymore that way & the panel will be safer
