Mixed in with a bunch of 6013 rods I found a bundle of 7014 rods I didn't even know I had or where I got them. What kind of welding are the 7014 rods used for? (I tend to do everything with 6011 and 6013 or mig.) Thanks in advance for advice.

Reading a welding rod number is pretty simple. The first two numbers are tensile strength. A 7014 rod has a 70,000 psi tensile strength. The last 2 numbers represent position of weld and weld polarity. The 7014 rod can be used in any position with AC and DC- (negative) welders. The 7014 has a iron powder coating which allows for a heavy metal lay down and fast welding. The 6013 is a slow welding rod that gives a "pretty" weld and the 6011 is a fast rod like the 7014. And of course the 6011 and 6013 are 60,000 psi strength used with AC, DC+ and DC-. I hope this helps.

7014's are iron powder rods i believe. I use them for filling on poor fit-up joints around the farm. They deposit very nicely. They don't seem to penatrate very well. They do make a purty joint though. I just use them to fill and then go over it with 6011's if i want any strength to it.

I believe they are just harder/stronger rods. The first two numbers are the tensil strength of the weld material. I use 7014 for general welding.
