What size tip do you use when you are spraying enamel paint like on a tractor? I have heard 1.4 mm is the best, but I can't get mine to spray smooth. I had a 1.7mm tip and had good results, gun is broken now, got this new 1.4 cheap gun and can not for the life of me get a good spray.

I had a cheap $12 HF siphon feed gun with a 1.7 tip and got great results painting tractors and cars and everything else. I did not get it cleaned well this last time aparently and taking it apart I broke the gun, I had gotten my moneys worth out of it. I went to HF and got a gravity feed with 1.4 tip, can"t master that one yet. Been trying to find a siphon feed with 1.4 tip, but guess it has something to do with siphon feed needing a bigger tip. I bought another siphon feed cheap gun with 1.8, just throws out too much paint, my 1.7 tipped gun I liked cause I could adjust the flow of material down to 0(none at all all the way to full stream). This new 1.8 tipped gun when the flow adjustment is closed, paint still comes out strong. Just gonna have to play with the guns. Thanks.

Hi Mike,

For the majority of uses, the "standard" tip size on a spray gun is typically dependent on the means of feeding paint to the tip. For a gravity feed, full sized gun, a "standard" tip size would be 1.4mm and that size tip would normally be the one supplied with the gun. A similar suction feed gun would normally be supplied with a 1.8mm tip and a similar pressure feed gun would normally use a 1.1mm tip. There are variations on this for special purposes of course, but you should be able to get a decent color coat with the "standard" tip. If you can't, I'd look to other reasons for the problem; such as reduction (thinning) in accordance with the paint manufacturer's recommendations and/or proper adjustment of air pressure to the gun. I am assuming, of course, that you are referring to a compressor-supplied gun and not a turbine gun or an airless arrangement.
