I have DSL and wireless. I have DSL goin to the comp downstairs and wireless goin to my laptop in my room. I prefer the DSL just because you cant drop the connection. Its easy to drop the wireless connection, and that pisses me off. I find myself down on the DSL more then on the wireless laptop.

If you drop your phone service and get VOIP phone, you probably will loose 911 calling ability, if you have that in your area. Is that not right?

If I had a choice I would go for the DSL for stability. If the wireless internet is anything like the satalite TV, when storms are around, you loose signal or it keeps going in and out. I ahve AT&T DSL, really like it a lot. I have download speeds of 5K plus and uploads of 650k, so I am real happy. The only bad thing about getting internet really fast? Your computor cannot keep up with it. Mine is lightning fast in the morn and if I download a lot, I have to reboot about mid afternoon, then it goes back to working lightning fast again.

Where I live, I cannot get DSL, and the available land line dial-up is ridiculously slow--usually about 9kbs. So we tried satellite internet for several years. It was OK, but not that fast, expensive to buy the equipment and get started, and expensive every month. And when something went bad with the satellite, the system would not work for a couple of months and we wondered if it ever would work again. And it often would not work if it was stormy and every time it snowed wet, sticky snow, I had to clean off the dish to get it working again.

So when we heard about a local microwave based system from a mountain 5 to 10 miles from here, we checked into it. It cost about $10 more per month, but we did not have to buy the equipment. For $200, we were up and running, and they even got our wireless home network going, which we could not figure out with the satellite system. And best of all, the system is lightning fast and much faster than the satellite system ever was. We get almost instantaneous downloads! In the year we have had it, it only went down once, when there was a widespread power outage that affected the mountain where the tower is. Weather does not seem to affect the performance a bit. In short, we are very pleased with the wireless, microwave system.

For the system we are on, you have to have a line-of-sight clear path between the tower and the receiver dish, which we mounted on our deck. Many of our neighbors have also signed up with this service. Some of them have had to cut down trees to be able to clear the sight path to the tower from their location.

I don't have real experience with DSL, but people I know that have it like it just fine. It probably is less trouble to hook up to than the wireless system, but if your available wireless system is similar to ours, I think you will like either one.

We kept our telephone land line, even though each of our family members has cell phones. That way people we know can still reach us, even if they don't know our cell numbers. In our area, I think that if you call 911 from a cell phone, the officials can still tell where you are calling from, but this technology might not be everywhere.

Good luck, I bet you will love the speed of your new system.

Thanks for all of the replies. I live 2.5mi from town and can see the water tower from the roof(in ground house only a ten foot roof)and they claim an 8mi radius. I just couldn't figure what would be the best with both being the same speed and the same cost(wireless is 20.00 more to install)Will I need the second phone line or can I drop it like I planned?

Another benefit if you go with the wireless system is that you can drop your phone service all together. We did and went with a VOIP provider. This brings in our phone calls via the high speed wireless system. For us it is a flat rate US rate for 30 bucks a month. Doesn't matter who you call and when.

As far as losing signal during a storm, it doesn't happen unless the tower gets hit by lightning, which happens for us about 2 times per year. Since the signal doesn't have to go through the clouds like it does with satelite it is very stable in bad weather. Also, more companies are now offering a UHF antenna which is larger and can go through more obstacles like tree foilage.

If I had a choice, I"d go DSL. With wireless, you have a shared resource, namely the bandwidth on the channel you and a bunch of your closest neighbors are sharing. With DSL, you have a direct pipeline to the central office (CO) where there is a much fatter connection.

That said, I am thankful that we finally have an alternative here to at least get wireless (WiMAX). In our case, the equipment is $300 and the monthly charge is $21 for 256k x 256k and double that for 768k x 768k. Keep in mind that is the max and will drop whne there are more users on line.

Good luck and I"m with you getting away from dial-up.

I've put up a few antennas for wireless, can't have anything in the way, not even one tree. Some wireless providers are starting to complain about interference from other sysems. My personal opinion FWTW , wireless will be a passing thechnology in a few years. DSL will expand in future years. It's pretty reliable ,cheap hardware. I was lucky living out in the middle of nowhere and getting DSL. Anything will be better than dialup.

wireless by all means. You don't need to be hooked up to a wired modem. If you have a lap top with a wireless card, you can use it anywhere within range of the transmitter.

Mike, He is talking about a different wireless than you are. He means the incoming signal to his house is wireless. It comes in via an antenna on the roof. From there you can hook up a wireless router if you want to have wireless access in your house or you can plug in direct and use a wire system in your house.

That said, go with the wireless incoming, it is fast and not affected by much. I did.

We had dial up at the house until November. Got the wireless and it is a lot faster than the DSL that I use at work. We paid $280 for modem/antenna, $80 for wirless router and $47 a month for service, but this is Mexico and may cost more here than the states.
