I am wanting to know if I can remove a 3.8 v-6 from a Dodge or Chrysler product and put a pto on it to power a 18000 generator. Would really like a small diesel engine to do the work, cheaper and more economical. What are your thoughts? Please

Its one of those projects by the time its all adapted together. It costs as much as going out and purchasing an engine or pto driven 18KW genrator. In addition you have spent all that time and running for parts to end up with a one of a kind machine. Without warrenty or dealer parts support.

A Pierce Govenor is the name your looking for. I have an old Chevy 327 setting in the polebarn that I inherited when the widow across the road sold out. I helped her brother in-law remove the old home made sawmill the husband used for years. I remember that Chevy ran almost silently, but you could hear the head saw sing all over the valley once in a while.

You'd also probably have to do some gearing to match an efficient engine speed to whatever speed the generator runs at (1800 or 3600 RPM depending on number of poles).

I've heard of people using an aftermarket cruise control as a governor, but I have no idea if one of these could control engine speed tight enough for a generator. Setting up a governor is a little more complicated than just connecting it to the engine. If it doesn't have enough control authority or doesn't respond fast enough, you'll get dips in engine speed when applying a load and surges when removing a load. Not really a big deal on a tractor, but can be a problem running a generator. If it has too much control authority, the system can oscillate, i.e, the engine speed will cycle up and down uncontrollably.

The V-6 would work if you could put a governor on it to keep constant RPM's under load..Diesel has such a governor built into injector pump..
