My husband began mowing a bit of property we own that had gotten a littlee bit high with our mower. After nearly 2 hours of mowing fine, the engine began to die anytime my husband tried to mow grass. The engine would start ok but die as soon as it was pushed onto the grass to mow. He restarted, died, restarted, died, etc., etc. We decided the engine throttle was not working, so we manually pushed the throttle open as far as it would go. Start, die again. We have no idea what to try, does anyone have suggestions (and also instructions) on what to try?

Hi there,I can help you on your lawnmower.
I've been a small engine mechanic for the past 30 years.Sounds to me that you've got trash or maybe even water in the fuel system.tell your husband to drain and clean the fuel tank good. Then clean the carburetor.the best way is to take it off & apart.use a 5/16 nut driver to get your air filter out of the way, then with a 3/8 nut driver take the two bolts out holding the carburetor on.
Take the fuel line off, with a 1/2" wench take the screw on the bottom thats holding the bowl out ,with a pair of neddle nose plairs work the small pin holding the float out.be careful not to lose the needle valve from the float.then take a can of carburetor & choke cleaner and spray down every hole and tube.(if your carburetor has an adjustment screw in it down that hole too.)If it doesn't run out carburetor opening run wire down that hloe to unclog.(I use torch cleaning files)
put back together.(If it had an ajustment screw,
screw in all the way(do not tighten!!!then beck screw back out 1-1/2 turn.Fill with gas & crank

I bet the blade is loose. The blade becomes part of the rotational inertia and the symptom is to fire once and quit if the blade is loose.

If it starts ok then the plug is probably not the culprit. Probably it's either due to a problem with air or gas. Check and clean the air filter and be sure there is good clean gas in tank. Could be a little water got into the tank on the last fill up.

I'd start by replacing the spark plug.
