Shop fan has a 1/2 hp 110v motor. Worked fine then one day it just sat there and buzzed. If I give it a head start she works fine. There is no a starting capacitor on this motor, just simply 5 wires. Switch, Switch, 110v, Common, Ground.

It spins freely with no power and doesn't make any noise so the bushings should be fine. I may take it apart and clean it, but I imagine the starting winding is possibly bad. Any other ideas before I have to buy a new motor?

Yes, you all were right. I took it apart again and test ran it on the bench. The points would spark then quite. I adjusted them to hold a little tighter against each other and she took right off. Verified they opened all the way after it got up to speed and they did.

Thanks, ya save me a Hundred bucks.

Check the points inside that control the start windings, probably dirty or corroded

I took it apart and it was pretty dirty. I blew it clean, removed all of the terminals and cleaned them and sanded down the contacts. I checked the weights and they are moving back and forth okay.

Put it back together and turned it on (without a belt) and it just buzzes. If I spin it, it starts spinning then clicks and takes off. The clicking I hear are the weights so I know they are working.

The windings look brand new, no burnt spots and it all smells good. Sanding the contacts may not have been very sucessfull as it should have been.

Do they sell just a board and terminal switch for those little motors or should I just take it down and let a winding shop test it and fix it. After all it's only a $100 motor but maybe a switch would be much cheaper.

Thanks

I replaced several on small motors. Make sure you have the switch set right so the contacts will be closed when the motor is stopped and then open after the motor starts. Of course check for any loose connections. You don't want to run the motor with the contacts closed or the start winding will burn up.

An aside, It has been determined that motors do not run on electricity. They run on smoke. When the smoke gets out, the motor STOPS.
