The big tow hooks mounted under bumpers on buses and trucks. They can face up or down but I read one time that if mounted one way and they break they may fly up. If mounted the other way they tend to fly down. Which way?

Got this from a jeep site. TJ/YJ/CJc are all jeeps.

the military ALWAYS runs hooks tip side up. However this is on cables/ropes NOT mounts. The reason you go hook side up on a cable is b/c if it snaps momentum/weight carries the cable down. The military only uses d-rings on body connections... That being said remember that all TJ/YJ/CJs come with the hooks flipped up, so I'd say either way is fine.

A lot of the factory installations I've seen lately have these mounted sideways, often thru the bumper. I don't think it really matters which way they face when something breaks, Seen a lot of chains, cables and straps snap and fly over the years and they seem the fly in any direction they take a mind to. Best just stay out of the way as much as possable during one of these operations.

On the old caterpillar crawlers, on the belly pan the were always turned down, made that way, thinking of some of the old real heavy dump truck chassis like AutoCar, White Construktor, Mack B-models etc. a lot of them were down too, although seen plenty the other way around. I think it's a good thing to cut down as much resistance when unstucking a heavy piece of equipment, truck or other, never know what could go flyin !

i would think that if mounted with the hook facing up they would fly down wich would be a little safer if they did break. tim

The factory hooks under the front of my Toyota 4Runner are mounted down, with a strap to hold the chain in place.
