There is a spray called "cold zinc galvanization" No need for primer, just spray it on and done. Used it for years and years, lasts a LONG time. Check with your local paint store, they should have it, or can get it. Doug N

When I was kid, my folks had galvanized gutters on the roof and wanted them painted. I got assigned the job and Dad made me wipe them down with vinegar(acetic acid) and then I painted them . They looked nice for quite a while.

Dad always used vinegar b/4 prime and paint on galvanized metal. As you've said, the gutters held paint for many years. After the house fire, they needed painting every 3(+/-) years. Have fun.....don t. .....

Ace hardware sells a paint called "Hammerite". No primer, just brush it on an go. I used some on some corral panels I made about 10 years ago and have had no problems yet. This stuff does fade to a grey in a year or two but that ain"t a problem to me.

Paint store that sold me primer for galvanized metal told me that if metal was new, their primer should be used. If new metal has weathered to the point it is dull looking then it is not necessary to prime.

I just read a can of deck stain which indicated that it could be used without primer on galvanized. I don't know of any silver deck stain 'tho

PPG used to make a product called Galva-Prep to prep the metal to accept paint and primer.

620,
Good question! There's lots of information on the subject - some pro; some con. I guess you'll just have to decide for yourself. You can try a google search on "painting galvanized metal" and see if that helps your decision.

There probably is paint specially made for use with galvanized metal, but there definitely is primer for that. Many paint jobs that fail, particularly on metal, do so because the wrong primer, or more often no primer, is used. Primer is often the element that bridges the gap between a difficult surface and a high quality protective coating.

Yesterday my wife and I were going into a public building when she pointed to the chipping paint on the metal handrail and said, "That's why I don't want metal fencing around our property." My answer was, "That happened because they didn't paint it right in the first place. That's galvanized pipe and there's no primer coat." It was that obvious. Kind of a coincidence, huh?
