I have an Echo string trimmer that has a crack in the gas tank. The tank is plastic, nylon, or polycarbonate, not sure what. Any ideas on how to patch or fix it. The tank for that model has been discontinued.

If you can't find a small engine repair shop with an old one to replace it with, I would use either double bubble epoxy or JB Weld. Either one of these products have worked good for me.

Most often a local owned/operated small engine repair shop will have a few pieces of equipment and parts around and most likely could get one from them to replace yours with.

Recently tried a product called "Seal-All", got it at Walmart. Works good. Might be worth a try. It's made just for this type of thing.

My echo gas tank cracked and leaked about 10 years ago. I cleaned it with Beeresman's carb. cleaner & smeared on J B weld. still working today.

I used JB Weld on my Stihl chain saw tank. Granted, the tank on my saw is more rigid, but it should work. It's been that way for 4 years now.

go to the garden tractor board and send JT a message he probley has a couple of junk trimmers in his shop and would sell you a different tank easier than trying to cobble a piece of junk

I've had good luck welding/melting cracks, splits and breaks in quite a few plastics with an old pistol grip soldering iron. I've put parts back together that were completely broken and even fixed a cracked gas tank on my pressure washer. I don't have a clue how it got cracked. Being a gas tank I ran it dry, sucked it out the corners using a plastic tube blown across by my air compressor then finished blowing fumes etc out of it with the air compressor first. I continue to get better at my plastic "welding". It really is like metal welding in many ways. It works best when it's melted together all the way through the plastic but when it's hot it can sag or bubble in this case into the tank and can become a mess but what do you have to loose? It's easier when you can get to the back side too. Also like welding there are lots of fumes that can't be good. I do it outside.

I'll bet 3M structural adhesive would fix it.

JHH,

That's a tough one! If the tank is made from molded polypropylene, Loktite makes this glue, LoctiteŽ All Plastics, which works great on polypropylene. It also will glue polyethylene.

Wal-Mart and other such stores sell it for around $3.00. To be honest with you, I think you may find that a replacement tank is the best way to go.

Regardless, please post back with the solution you come up with.

Thanks...

The tank is probably polyethylene. It can be heat welded with varying success. Find someone with that experience. I have one of the early WeedEater with Kioritz engine. Echo is tied in with Kioritz somehow. I also had an obsolete part. Local independent repair shop (young fellow with two-car garage in his backyard) found a similar part from another trimmer and adapted it to work on mine. Perhaps you could do similarly.
