Any advice on miter saw?

I have to trim out my house and don't like my old miter box. I am looking for a saw and stand that would be easy to use. I don't plan on mitering anything wider than 4" or say a 2x4. There are so many choices. I am not earning a living with this saw, and will pay a little more to get quick, accurate cuts. Your comments on choices would be appreciated. Leonard

I have a 12" Dewalt[not slider] and a 10" Delta [not slider],both with "Oldham" 60 tooth,Finish Blades,Laser equipped, I use to build Furniture with and like both equally. Beats the old Craftsman Slider Hand Powered Trim Saw I used to use. I really like the "Laser" attachments.JC.

DeWalt 12" is a gem. The sliding miter saws are heavier and take more space. That can be a consideration.

I have access to an Hatachi sliding mitre saw and really like that one, but it is a bit pricey.

Those ridgid brand from home depot are peppy little saws. I know of one that is 4 years old and working well.

I own a Ryobi 10 inch miter saw that I got on sale for 40 bucks!! It has been the best buy ever, I can't break that thing. It's cheap enough but also good enough to cut trim boards.

How on earth did you manage to get that Ryobi for $40? I got one for $55 and one for $65 and thought I was doing well. You hadda know someone! Anyway, the Ryobi's are fine for the money. I don't make a living with them, but am building a 2000 square foot house and use them quite often and no complaints. Be wary of the Delta's. Bought one before the Ryobi and it would vibrate so bad on start up that the piece you were trying to cut would move no matter how tight you held it. Complained to Delta and was told that it was the "nature of the beast" and they could do nothing. Yeah, right! So got rid of it and got the Ryobi's. Got rid of the original blades and put in 60 tooth blades for a smoother cut.

A little over a year ago, my wife bought me a Dewalt DW705 single-bevel 12" compound miter saw from Costco. At that time, it was around 200 bucks, which was a real deal considering that this same saw was around $400 just a few years ago. Apparently they really dropped the price on this model after the double-bevel and sliding models came out. I don't know if Costco still has any these saws, but it's worth looking into. Although a double-bevel saw would be nice, it's a convenience rather than a necessity.

Definitely get a 12-inch saw, whatever brand you decide on. A 10 inch saw will just barely handle 6 inch wide boards.

Go to the power mitre box display at your nearest big box lumber store, grab each saw and wiggle and twist it. Then look at price. A few months ago I bought a sliding power mitre, but before I did I yanked and jerked on every one on display at several stores to find out which one wiggled the least amd slid the smoothest. Accuracy is quite important to me so I did end up spending quite a bit of money, but it's up to you on what you want for accuracy, and you know your budget better than I do.Jim

Ain't but one. DeWalt 12" compound sets the standard for all the rest

I bought a generic Delta at an estate sale for $36 that worked fine. It's light weight so you can carry it to wherever you need easily. I gave it to my son when I needed the room. On the other end of the spectrum I have a Dewalt 708 slider that does a beautiful job. It's on a HF portable stand that works okay. I did upgrade the factory blade on the 708. It is my understanding from talking to tool guys that the Makita and the Dewalt are the class of the sliders.

I have been happy with my Craftsman compound miter saw from Sears. It came with a laser on it that is quite accurate as well as handy.
