I am needing to do some electrical work on an old outboard engine. The cheap 100W China made solder gun someone gave me 20 years ago (with litle use since) didn't last one evening (plastic housing melted).

Looking for recommendations about specs (is 100W enough?) and brands and sources.

Thanks,

40 years and going with my Weller, keep in the plastic case it came in and it still looks like new. Have used it hard over the years and still
works as good as when new. Got a used 225 watt several years ago and it looks like they will last as long as I do. If there are better ones out there, they must be something to beat a Weller.

I like weller as a brand.. however for irons.. I'm more of a 'pencil' type solderer. I don't do anything needing high heat.. if I do.. I get a propane torch..

The rest of my soldering is circuit board sized with 5w tips.. etc..

I use several Weller guns in the shop. Most are 135 watt but the 225 watt is needed at times. My first Weller was put to work in 1951.The tip nuts must be kept tight or you wont get enough heat. The Weller was a big improvement over the big soldering irons.I still use irons on big jobs, buy them in a used tool shop.I keep the big irons in an old mail box.Rats and mice will chew the woven insulation on the cords..

I brought this Weller 32 years ago its took a lick'n and kept on tick'in. I have dropped it a few times from the top of motor homes and trucks. Tape and tie raps keep it together, one of the most durable tools I have ever owned. I make my own tips out of copper wire, the store brought ones are to high.

Hobo ,the tips are in wrong, tip ends are supposed to go thru the holes in the nuts then bent to L shape and come out thru the side holes.Im using the same Weller gun my uncle bought for me in 1951.You can buy new housings, the tape will keep heat in the primary winding.Tips were 35 cent a pair now run 8.00.I make my own from # 12 copper wire.

Well DH these are my modified safty Quick disconnects @ $75.00 a hour the boss don't expect me to fiddle fart around with my nuts.
If i drop it most likely the tip will bend B-4 it pokes a hole on my foot. I will keep that in mind tho, I would like a new housing.

well I will look into it do you have a web address. DH I really don't have any thing again ya and agree with a lot of what you have to say but I think you owe someone a apology for a comment, the word you chose was jut not apporate in my opinion. I take it you tell it like it is and a man I feel I could trust and bank on his word. No doubt you have a vast amount of knowledge. what has got me in trouble here is knowledge i have learned but can not git it past the non believers. I give up, folks want to hear what they want to here if they don't then they for sure do not respect what you have to say and respect what they want to here. Theirs a gal that hates me cuzz i have told her like it izz just like you would. Some times you have to look over the little things and move on. I spec if we were the elites we would not choose to hang out here and find comparable folks to hang with. In my opinion i think you need to make amends with a certain fellow who may not meet your expectations but is a rite like able person and means no one any harm. As much as I do not want to side with any one I am going to have to side with him just because of one word you used. I would bet that if you, me and him were put in a room along we would find we have a lot in common and would be the best of buddies. don't let one little word separate what could be. I don't think he are me is out to show you up, make the call, show me the man I think you are and respected even if I don't agree with you all the time. You are the only one that can put a end to it. I will never make another comment foe are again.

There are plenty of good people on this forum but their knowledge is often shot down by Dufus types.Too much bum info is passed off as gospel. One wopper is disconnecting a battery while the engine is running to see if the generator is working. Most all equipment discussed on this forum have ammeters.I was jumped on because I said a hydraulic press is a must have in a farm shop.My press is one of the most useful tools I have in my shop.It takes up little space and has made money for me.My welders and metal lathes are all money makers. My woodworking tools are used hard.Ive ran thousands of feet of window and door trim over the years.Just did a repair job on 2 shutters for the steeple on a local church.Church members were told it was impossible to repair these shutters by an expert in a big shop. This was a free job but I can look over and see the shutters I repaired every day.Ive done gun repair over the years and still fix a wind up clock now and then.I learn some thing new every day and do not get PO at people who know things I have no knowledge of.I question them to learn what they know.We went to a fair and I spent time talking with a woodcarver. He showed me feathers he carved out of basswood and moose antler. He said he and other carvers were having a hard time finding basswood. We exchanged business cards and I told him I would be sawing bass wood lumber in October.WE all come into this world with a blank book and depend on others for all we know.My sons new house needs 5000.00 worth of clapboards plus another 5000.00 in pine finish. This will be cut from logs on my land on my sawmill. One fellow posted that he was breaking lynch pins while dragging logs.He was dragging logs on top of a box blade and had trouble with the tractor rearing up.I told him to get rid of the box blade and get the logs close to the draw bar.He said I was nuts.Friend got hold of an old jointer. It had no guard on it ,I said, dont use it without a guard. His left ring finger is a 1/2 inch shorter now.I have decided not to look at this forum anymore.Tired of Dufus going nuts when I try to help.

I can tell from the past you did not just fall out of the sky and don"t deserve the ragging you are git"n but the other fellow don"t either, my opinion only.

follow up on the Weller from a email I sent last night, thanks for the thought I would have never looked into upgrading it. I think I will buy it a new dress.

Weller makes good solder guns, but I personally like the butane fueled pencil type tools. They have different tips and a small torch tip. They are nice for small work.

Arkandan said: (quoted from post at 23:08:16 08/24/07) American Beauty was the only iron used when I worked for the telephone company (prior to the wire wrap era).
When I was in the Central Office, we used both the wire wrap and American Beauty iron.

Look on eBay for Wellers. They are many of them.

American Beauty was the only iron used when I worked for the telephone company (prior to the wire wrap era). As stated, "you get what you pay for".

Weller is the brand that I have used at home and at work. Heats up fast and has a work light that is mounted right below the element so it shines where you need it. Not real cheap, but these days you get what you pay for. Found in most hardware, farm supply and building supply stores around here (soggy SE Wisconsin) billy

Ditto the comments on the Weller. I bought one last summer, and I'm quite pleased with it. Of course, most of my soldering isn't small-gauge wire as used on computer circuits...but if it was, a friend gave me a cold-heat soldering gun for that kind of work, simply because he liked his so well. Haven't had a chance to use that one yet.
