The trans is shifted via a cable from the operator shift lever to the transmission manual shift lever. The cable has an adjustment at one end. The adjustment mechanism has to be first unlocked and then with the transmission manual lever in park move the operator shift lever to park. once the two are synchronized you then slide the cable housing lock into place. From memory I think the cable lock is down by the transmission where it anchors to the bracket which is bolted to the trans housing.

I believe the locking mechanism has serrations so that once it is slid into place it retains that position. Been a lot of years so you will have to study the locking mechanism to see how it unlocks and locks. Quite simple once the dirt and mud has been cleared away.

If it is like the '91 Ford the adjustment is very small cable on the top side of the steering column that operates the pointer. The dash bezel comes off after removing the knobs for headlights and wipers. Unfortunatly I don't remember exactly how the adjustment is made. It has been too long since I did one. Maybe someone will fill in the blank. Email if I can be of further help, Pete

Let's see if I can remeember. On my '86 F250 the cable is a fixed length, with a loop hooked to a finger on the shift column and another loop hooked to the pointer assembly. There is slight adjustment on the column. It was originaly plastic cable of some type, but it broke. I think only the complete assembly was available from the dealer. Access is by removing the plastic shroud from the steering column and the instrument cluster bezel. I replaced it by using 27lb nylon coated, 7 strand braided steel fishing line and matching cable sleeves. A 30' spool of the coated wire is about $3 plus a package of the sleeves. I used a terminal crimper to install the sleeves. It may take several tries to get the right length, but at something like 15¢ per try, it won't break the bank.
