I am starting to make all the front end parts for 2 of my RJ Wheelhorse tractors (1959). I have a lot of ground and polished 3/4" 1045 stock for the spindles and king pins. They have to be welded to each other as well as a piece of 1018 steel bar stock. As 1045 will heat treat, will the joint become too hard and be subject to cracking? Expect to Mig weld the pieces. Hope to produce extra units and see if there is a market for them.

1045 is not recommended to be welded. it is a cheaper alternative to 4150 and 4140. and is primarilary for machining parts that can be heat treated. it can be welded. I preheat it,approx 500 degrees then weld it. then reheat the weld joint to a dull red glow and cool it very slowly in lime, sand, any good insulating material which will conrol the loss of heat to rapidly. After cooling check for hardness with a file if you feel it is too hard where the weld meets the 1045 , reheat to red glow and cool slowly again. If it is a dangerous application i would recommend buying a steel that is okay to weld. One of the most important factors of a weld joint is a good weld prep which allows for a 100% deposit ,not just a bead or beads on the outer surface.
