I just picked up a Coleman 11hp 6250/5500 Powermate generator for cheap.

He say's the engine runs.

Of course the guy said it doesn't generate, and someone has apparently started to dissasemble it.

I figure I'll re-attach the wires and tighten the bolts that are loosened, and see if some form of winding excitement (an ac/dc brush drill motor spun by hand) lights it up.

But beyond that, what are the most common failure items with these units?

And where can I find a parts list breakdown or other free manuals online?

Who is the best source for parts?

Mort,
The two things we replace on Coleman gennies are the brushes and the capacitor. One or the other normally solves the problem.

My oldest daughter & son-n-law bought a Coleman Powermate 6250 / 5000 watt generator but with a 10-HP motor. Right out of the box I couldn’t get it to fire, (no spark) called tech support, to my surprise they said to over fill the engine with oil. Persnickety Murphy switch I guess! Fired right up, but no output power, had to excite the generator with a 12-volt car battery. Runs perfect now. I don’t have the manual as I said it’s my daughter’s generator, but Coleman’s tech support was very very helpful. 1-800-445-1805 Link

I'm hoping it just needs exciting.

Apparently it has brushes on the end section.

Like I said it was halfway started to get torn down by who knows who. So I'll try getting it back together and give it a try.

It was raing coming home so it's all wet right now. I covered the gas cap but I doubt they did so water in gas might be an issue before I even get to test it.

I feel it might be best to dry it off/out too rather then get all electrocuted.

How did you excite it with 12V.

I've heard that a drill motor plugged in and spun will backfeed enough to wake it up if that's all it is.

I can't even find a parts breakdown on the web. But I haven't tried REAL!! hard yet.

I see lots of small parts lited though at various websites.

Her generator is the brush less type. I took an old extension cord with just the male end. Placed the black wire on the + positive post of the 12-volt battery, and the white wire on the – negative post. Once the generator was up to speed I plugged the 120-volt male plug in and out as fast as I could into the generator. Worked like a charm.

Now just going by memory so please don’t hold me to this, because I only read this in her manual. Attach the black wire of the extension cord to the + positive side of the brush, and the white wire of the extension cord to the – negative side of the brush, again just going by memory!
