My 031av appears to have very few hours on it. It is clean and has only a few scratches. It came to me from someone who passed away, so the saw's history is not available. I had a (retired) shop owner/dealer look at it for me. He cleaned the points and then it started and ran great. I took it home and used it for about 15 minutes, then it died. When I could not get it started again, I took the saw apart myself, cleaned the coil contacts, put it together and it started on the first pull. It ran great, again, for about 60 seconds, shut off and now will not start again. (I'm guessing this is why the saw looks almost like new) I don't know if disassembly and reassmebly is inadvertently fixing a possible short or if there is actually a failing part. I checked for spark in the no-start condition. There is no spark at the plug. I do not know how to check the coil or ign. module, especially with an intermittent problem. Has anyone out there experienced a similar situation before? I have another 031 that runs and cuts great and would like to have them both running if I could. I would really appreciate any help!!
Thanks in advance!!
Tom

I too have had the same problem w/ a 031.Points,condensor was no help.Dealer said coils gave alot of trouble and as someone said few parts are available. turns out that a saw tech at a local rental place told me that those coils rarely go bad.He looked at mine and found a bad plug wire. Been running great.Hope this helps, mine would only run a short time too.

Dad's 031 was doing the same thing. I ended up changing the condensor and it ran great for a couple of years. Now it's doing the same thing and the stihl man says that parts are no longer available. Dad got an aftermarket thing that is supposed to replace the points and condensor, but we have never taken the time to play with it.

Thomas,
You may have a condensor breaking down and may need replaced.

Check your fuel lines for cracks and hardening. The saw will suck air in thru the cracks and die esp under load or reving .The clear line tend to do that aftr a few years and need to be replaced.

I had an 031 for 30 years and used it a lot. It was a good saw, but installing and adjusting points was a pain. My dealer sold me an electronic module that took the place of points and condenser. That solved the problem.
