Static, too

The post below on CB radio static brought my static issue to mind.

I live in a fairly remote location although only about 10 miles from town.

There are high tension wires about 1/4 mile from my home.

I get static on either AM or FM and on my scanner (dipole & stinger) that comes in pulses of about one second ON and one second OFF. Can that come from the high tension wires? What else might have those characteristics?

Thanks,

Roger

I'm a ham {probably in more ways than one} and have a little experience in this line. You might try taking an AM portable radio, {battery powered} and start snooping around with it...it has an antenna and can be somewhat directional with a bit of practice. Try tuning it in between stations and go to walking. I've seen it be as some of the fellows described and also loose hardware on electric lines. Also, if you have any of those touch lamps in the house...unplug them...and keep doing this to eliminate everything in the house. I wish you luck...cause sometimes they are hard to find. Please report back if it's something exotic so the rest of us will be a bit wiser. ohfred (KE8SS}

Electronic air cleaners do that. Seems they pulse the charge to the plates for some reason.

Thanks for the replies.

The nearest property that may possibly have a fence charger is about 1/2 mile away. Would that be close enough to cause this static interference?

I have neither an aquarium nor a door bell. There are flourescent fixtures are in the shop, but only ON when I'm there.

Is there some sort of signal tracer that could lead me in the direction of the ststic source?

Check your door bell transformer. It may be dying and its thermal protector can cycle that way. An acquarium heater will do that too. Some fluorescent and MV lamp ballasts can fail that way.

The first radio transmitters were nothing but a spark jumping a gap with and antenna on one side and a ground on the other.

Definately, an electric fence charger will do that. especially if the fence is shorted somewhere.
