I purchased a house, safe came with it. The door is open and I am trying to figure out the 4 didgit combination. Any idea what way you turn the dial first on a mosler? can anyone give me any more hints? I have the back of the door off looking at the internal guts.

As others have said, do it right. Get a licensed lock smith to set it to your numbers, service it. Tom

I am a locksmith, It may be all over the web already but I dont feel right blabing it on the web myself. Mosler is a very good name. It would be well worth any nominal fee you spend with your local locksmith to figure it out for you and service it while he is at it. If by some chance you figured it out on your own but didnt do something just right or it is in bad need of service you may end up locking it up and it wont open again. Murphy's law says it will work long enough for you to trust it and start putting stuff in it, and then one day it wont open. I am sure he (locksmith) wont charge you much for a safe that is already open.

What's it cost to open a closed safe?

probably different parts of the country have different averages, but with me on one that is locked up It depends on the type of safe and how long I have to work on it, but an average would be 250. If a burglar has tried to get in and set the relockers off it could get expensive.
I am not talking about cheap sentury safes or the like. Almost anyone could get into those.

About 15 years ago I bought a Mosler safe from a plant I worked in - brand new, 10 years old and open - for $20. Nobody had a clue about the combination so I got it for scrap price. I got it home and found a local locksmith/ safe guy who disassembed the lock mechanism and made up a new 4 digit combination. He ask if I had any numbers in mind but I told him to suprise me. The new combination cost me $40. Still cheap for a safe! Check the local yellow pages.

Hey there jackrbit3;
Has to be similar to a diebold safe.I worked there for 22yrs.there is a "key" that goes into the back of those combination locks it gives the ability to change the combination.You MIGHT need to take the back cover off the lock to align the wheels,it's not as difficult as you think.Your local lock-smith might help you. Moslers come in both flavors - hand change and key change. Is there any other markings on the safe, like Protectal?

If it's a 3 wheel safe, which it probably is:
4 times right (clockwise)
3 times left
2 times right
left to drop-in
Everytime you pass a number count it as a full turn.

If it is like what I have played with,it could be either. That is it would be one set of number turning one way and a diferent set going the other way. I think the usual it to turn several turns clockwise first to stop at a number, then back past that number so many times, etc. When you get it figured out, write it down.
