Removing grease from coat

Well -- went and did a dumb thing. Even though I have outdoor clothing for working on the tractor I ran out "for just a minute" to put it away the other night while wearing a coat not approved by the missus for dirty work.

Sure nuff I came in and noticed a couple of big black grease smears on the front where I must have leaned against something in the dark. Sigh.

So, anyone have any good grease removal tips? The material is a medium blue of that nylon kind of stuff ski jackets are made of.

Take it to the dry cleaner shop. Cheaper than buying specialty products, less work, and they will get it out perfectly. I always have my working jackets dry cleaned - even the ones that are washable - because they do a great job at a reasonable cost.

Lots of good ideas. Whatever you use, if it is washable, do not dry it in a dryer until you have determined that the spot is all out. The dryer will tend to "set" any stain that is left.

Like Jeryy says, Use Dawn dish soap, scrub it in with a stiff brush, let it sit an hour or so. Grease will come right out when washed.

When I was a kid and living at home with my parents,my sweet mother used to wash my clothes seperate from everyone elses. She used warm water and Lestoil. My clothes used to come out pretty clean.Of course, she used an old wringer washing machine. She swore that machine got clothes cleaner than those new-fangled automatic washers. She stopped using that old machine just a few years ago.Stubborn woman..... .hmmmm??? Wonder who I take after????

I feel your pain. I had a uncle that rebuilt big truck trannys for a living. At the end of every day, he looked like he had just put clean clothes on. I never saw him get dirty. I can check the oil in my pickup and have it all over me and everything else. I use GoJo like recommended below as a pre wash rub in, then add Simple Green in the washing machine for greasy work clothes. Works pretty good for me.

Hey guys -- thanks for all the suggestions! We've got some of that stuff around the house so I'll start with what we have and expand my horizons from there.

I've successfully used a new product from the WD-40 people.

It's called SPOT SHOT. The label says it's for carpets but it shouldn't hurt a jacket. Try a test area first.

We've sprayed it on oil stained carpet and it does remove the stain without scrubbing. Its for motor oil stains, blood,pets.etc.

Little hard to find but supermarkets should carry it.

Shout. Spray and Rubb it in with a brush and let soak and wash in warm water. If not right repeat with shout BEFORE you dry the coat.

Is this a coat/jacket that you wash or is it a coat that is dry cleaned? If it is a coat that is laundered your self then used "Shout Laundry Cleaner" or "Spray N Wash" on the grease stain before you put it in the wash. Let it sit for a few hours after putting the stain remover on before putting it in the washer.

All these remidies your given is just some thing tried and ( the grease is just dissolved ) and not removed -- unless it's not a jacket not important to you -- take it to a drycleaner and it will be removed with no problem --- but if your cheap -- do it their way .... Joe

We use a degreaser on the spots, rubbing it in thoroughly and then wash in the machine.

i;ve had good luck with removing grease stains, put newspaper behind the grease stain and shoot the stain with starting fluid, the newspaper will soak up the grease. not sure about a nylon jacket as havent done one of them yet.

USE BRAKE CLEANER from the inside out. This will leave it spot less as this leaves no residue. You will not be able to tell where it was. CENTAUR

Waterless hand cleaner as a pre-treatment works relatively well for stuff like that, although I don't think I've ever tried it on nylon.

If its a petroleum based fabric (like nylon) I"ve never been able to get it out. On cotton, I"ve gotten out everything but hydraulic fluid with rubbing wisk on the spot and letting it sit on top of the dryer for a week before washing it.
