I'm out of room and need some more tool storage. I'm looking for roll around cabinets and intermediate boxes. I don't want to pay new price and used equipment is fine with me...

anyone got any sources for used tool cabinets/boxes/storage units ??

I'm in Alabama and would like to keep it close

thanks
John

add a couple of modified shopping carts for portability of tools for a particular job and who could ask for more? Might turn up on a redneck life picture or something, but serves the purpose while saving space and money. Waste lumber from a construction site goes a long way too.

Good Luck,

Dave

I was given 3 heavy metal pattern cabinets when a local fabric store remodeled. Free, just for the hauling! They have removable dividers in the full suspension drawers. I have found them perfect for storing power and air tools, as well as anything that is too large for the drawers in my rollaway. The tops of the cabinets also make a pretty good surface for a bench, although it is a little high.

I also have scrounged several old file cabinets that are great storage in my shop. They came from a local school district and cost $10 each.

Occasionally someone will advertise rollaways in the local free shopper paper. I have never looked into buying one, because they have seemed to be pretty expensive for my budget. But you might find someone selling one at garage sales, flea markets, etc.

Costco sells a nice large stainless steel tool storage unit. If I didn't already have a Sears rollaway, I would seriously consider the setup from Costco. It isn't a whole lot more than I have in my rollaway, and probably has twice the storage, and is stainless steel. Good luck!

Sears is running a sale on their toolboxs right now and the Craftsman club price on their big stainless top and bottom rollaway is $1008.00.
Keep watch in the newpapers, I just bought a practically new KNAACK 5' gang box for my portable welding rig cables and tools for $170.00.
Times are pretty tough, folks are eating their seed and selling the tools they should be planting it with.

Our county hospital remodeled and auctioned a lot of steel cabinets and rolling carts. Cabinets were double-walled steel...one of them is excellent mouse proof storage for manuals.

Craig's List would be my first choice. Do not rule out ebay.
Do not actually buy it on Ebay but it will give you some contacts and leads so you can cut out Ebay and deal directly with the seller.

Seen Snap-on boxes go for 1/4 price

If you are anywhere near a populated area ....

I second the craigslist suggestion. IS see them in there all the time, usually Matco, Snap-on etc. but they never seem to be too inexpensive.

I've been using some heavy steel ex-US government 6 drawer file cabinets as tool chests for air tools, angle grinders, skil saws, etc- the larger stuff. the hold the big stuff well, plus they lock.
I use a cart when I'm working on stuff, so i don't even roll my actual box around much- casters could be fitted i guess, but I like the cart.

I've never seen a used tool box sell that didn't go for about twice what it was actually worth, and I've even seen beat up tool boxes sell for more than what a brand new one could be purchased for. Just be patient and wait for Sears to run a sale.

How about auctions and estate sales. If you are looking to buy direct. Try some of your tool dealers like mac, snap-on or matco. They get trade ins.
