I am rebuilding a 1948 Leroi compressor which has a 4-cylinder gas engine (approx 260 cu inches) driving a 2-cylinder compressing unit. I am trying to identify the engine. It is yellow original paint and the only significant marking on the casting is a diamond shape with an 'S' across the diamond. Is anyone familiar with this marking/engine. I need to find an intake valve for it. Many thanks..... ....Chris

Thank you! You guys nailed this item for me. I went to my local tractor yard and we found an Allis WC head, popped a couple of valves and they measured out just fine. Looks like my engine could be running this weekend. Thanks to all for your quick responses..... Chris

Chris : I presume this engine is a Monoblock with a single crank and block. I worked on this type compressor in the sixties , Very interesting aren't they ?? Le Roi made the entire unit, but Parts are long gone....Le Roi was a large industrial engine builder for 30 years , and also made a tractor. Contact me if you need more info.

I'd like to know a bit about my LeRoi. Model is 60G and serial 211X4003. Are most parts except the monoblock interchangable with some models of tractors? What about head gaskets? Mine has the old International Harvester logo (IH surrounded by a C) on the mag cap and on the rotor. I also need to know if they had a water pump or if they used the thermo-siphon. Mine is missing whatever bolted to the three holes on the front of the head, so I was going to adapt a thermostat housing to it and use an auxiliary water pump. It runs and pumps great except for a sticking exhaust valve, hence the need for a head gasket.
Thanks

Hi Chris,
I'm sorry I have no idea what kind of engine you have. If I was in your position here is what I would do. On your existing valve measure the length, stem diameter, head size, seat angle, and keeper groove type and position. Then spend some quality time going through valve manufacturer/supplier catalogs. You will find either a replacement valve, or one that can be modified to work.

If you can't find an exact replacement look for one with the same stem diameter that is either longer and/or has a larger head diameter. A machinist can reduce the head diameter and cut a new seat surface, or cut off a valve that is too long then machine in new keeper grooves and grind the tip flat. Good luck...Al English
