a neighbor recently gave me his 30 gal. parts washer. He said he fills it with about 20 gal
of water & 5-10 gal of solvent. Says the solvent floats on top of water. Is this normal?

Do the washer/degreasers that mix with H2O work?

Jake,
Depending what kind of solvent you use, most are lighter than water and will float on top, make sure the pump pick up is in the solvent not the water. the only concern I would have is after a while the water will rust out the barrel if it is steel. Mineral spirits are cheap, fill the barrel you will always have a fresh supply of solvent and it will last longer between cleanings one more thing to think about the grease and sludge that you clean off the parts will also float on top of the water creating a layer of crud that will eventually get sucked into the pump.
