synthetic 2 stroke oil says to mix at 50-1 ratio. if the engines call for say 20-1 or 32-1, do you run the 50-1 synthetic pre mix in the 50-1 ratio or the ratio the engine says to mix at ? seems like the 50-1 synthetic is pretty weak of a mix. oil guy says to run all of em at 50-1 with their synthetic. i'm confused. :-(

If it is a true synthetic and a good brand such as Amsoil then run it at whatever level the oil recommends. Synthetics are much better at lubing and can be run that lean. I have an '01 Yamaha Banshee which is 2 stroke and run Amsoil at 80:1 and you can't beleive the power difference. It is incredible the amount of responce it now has. Neighbor races enduro and has run the Amsoil for 5 years now even after being told he was gonna lock up his engine. Same engine and he tears it down every year... no visible signs of damage. It gets run wide open for miles at a time too.

I have ran 100:1 synthetic in all my 2 cycles for the last 20 years they run better and cooler.
If engine is newer than 1964 I believe thats the date all the engines went to needle bearings if no needle bearings run what they say to run.
The film strength and lubricating qualitys is so much better in 100:1 oil thats what allows it to be mixed lean.

I had a Homelite Super 2 chainsaw that I was not particularly fond of. I thought what the heck if it does blow. I started using synthetic premix at 100:1 , which was what the oil supplier recommended. I had to re-adjust the carb, but man that thing ran like no tomorrow. I ran it that way for about four years before I finally traded up.

Ojly thing i have seen with synthetic 2 stroke oil is if I mix it at 40:1 for my small chainsaw I seem to have a bit less power. Maybe it is because of the higher flash point of syn oil ? ie does not burn quite as well ?

I went back to reg 2 stroke oil and I did gain thr power back. Not a big difference, but noticible to me in smaller 2 stroke engines.

Because of a bad back I have to use the smallest chainsaws and weed eaters.

perhaps that is why they recommend the 50:1 mix ?

Glennster,
I sell OPTI oil, it is a synthetic oil that is 1.8 oz per gallon, 50:1 is 2.6 oz per gallon. It says it can be used in any 2 cycle engines. I do not feel comfortable using anything less than what the OEM reccomends. I figure they build it, they should know what oil to use in their machine. Ask your oil guy if he will replace your equipment if it fails due to insufficient lubrication using his synthetic one mix oil. That will tell you how good their oil is for a one mix thing. I would not use anything that is a outboard engine oil in an air cooled engine thought. a water cooled engine uses a high ash content, air cooled engines need an ashless oil. This is my opinion.

Hello JT
The mobil 2 cycle oil that I have been using is Mobil outboard super. Here are some of the qualities and specifications:
1) A premiun ashless oil.
(2) Formulated for premixing and oil injection.
(3) For use on all air cooled 2 stroke engines.
(4) A non Hazardous material, OSHA acceptable.
I have been using it for the last 20 years or so, and have had zero problems.
Guido.

Hey Guido,
As long as it is an ashless oil you will do OK. I get engines in that have the cylinders scored, but are very oily, but a lot of carbon, when I ask the customer what kind of oil they are using, I get told "2 cycle outboard oil" from the gas station, so, when I hear anyone using 2 cycle outboard oil I just have to put my 2 cents worth in, sounds like this is a good oil from what you say. I know the outboard oil is not the only problem causing carbon problems but it is a large contributing factor. Not running an air cooled engine at full RPM can also cause carbon buildup.

Hey Jt
My chain saw has been running with the outboard oil.
I bought it new in 1981, and I'm on the second spark plug. I still have the original fuel filter in it. Just used it this week, drop a couple of trees. I'm on my last quart of the stuff.
I'll need to get some more. I had bought 2 cases 32 qts. years ago. 20 yeas was a conservative estimate on my part.
Guido.

Opti is a very good oil but is not synthetic. I use it at 50:1 in my chain saw and M-X bike and have never had any oil related problems. The type of oil you use makes a big difference how lean you can mix it. Manufacturers will error on the more oil side because they don't know what oil you use.

"Manufacturers will error on the more oil side because they don't know what oil you use."

Some manufacters I have dealt with will tell you to use stated mix with their oil and more oil if you do not use their oil. I am not sure on the Opti not being a synthetic, the people I buy it from told me it was a synthetic, I honestly do not know. I just go by what I am told. At 50;1 you are using about 30% more oil than they recommend. Jim

Hello Glenster.
Oil to gas ratio is the same no matter what kind of 2 cycle oil you are using.
The 50 to 1 rating of the oil you have can be mixed at eny lower ratio if you need to do it .
40 to 1; 30 to 1 etc. There are engine that require more the 50 to 1 ratios, so the oil you have would not work for them. I personally have been using a 50 to 1 mobil outboard 2 cycle oil on everything that I have.
Guido.
