I have an older echo trimmer thats not running good anymore. It will start good but will only run with the lever pulled just a little off from the cold start setting. If I push to the run position it just dies. Do I have a problem inside the carb or a fuel problem?

My Echo string trimmer was new in 1984, now
giving lots of trouble, won't run good, when I
take it apart theres black goo in the carb.
I think it's from eythenal in the gas. I
retired it,Old dealer retired, got young punks
working there now, too many ear and nose rings
for me, so I went to an old Steil dealer, got new
trimmer, very pleased with it.

Spark arrester on the muffler anywhere? looks like a screen? Remove it.

Sounds like a new diaphram may be needed in the carb or possible a crack in the fuel line. Seems to be running lean for some reason.
If the trimmer is good otherwiast it is well worth having the carb rebuilt and the fuel lines replaced.
Echo are pretty sturdy machines, but the rubber parts in the carb and lines age from the fuel.
