I have seen these halogen light fixtures for sale at a local farm supply store. They are basically fluorescent type fixtures with 2 300 watt halogen bulbs instead of the 2 fluorescent bulbs. Has anyone had any experience with these? Good, bad or ugly? They are only about $20 apiece and are quite tempting to try. I guess the heat that they put out would be a detriment in the summer, but what else?

Tom,

At home we have the 500 watt portable lights, some might call them floodlights, or spotlights, but one thing is this, in the winter, they put out a lot of light and heat.....it is very very nice to have warm fingers when your under a truck or tractor working with little nuts and bolts. The Halogen lights are very sensitive however, you can not get fingerprints on the bulbs or they will burn out very pre-maturely. Our halogen lights are over 4 years old and we haven't burnt one out yet and use them almost 3 nights a week. In my opinion, the Halogen lights are awesome bang for the buck. Hope that helps.

I assume these are for a shop. I have an unheated pole barn in Michigan. I used flourescents in summer, but incandescents in winter. Ended up finding some inexpensive $29 or $39 flourescent yard lights at Menards in Iowa and Illinois. These look like mercury fixtures but have a weird fluorescent bulb in them. It takes 62 watts and puts out the same light as a 175 watt mercury. I put three of these puppies in my 30 X 40 pole barn and it looks like daytime with only 185 watts of electricity. They fire when they are cold as well.

Just another thought.

I've got one (Home Depot) which sounds like what you describe. It has a high & low setting, pull chain. It's over a bench where I do detail work & I really like the bright light! I turn mine on only when needed so it never stays on longer than say an hour. Only problem is that one blub gave up early on. However, since I replaced it about 2 years ago it is OK! Seems to me a lot of "original" blubs blow too early.

Heat isn't a problem, but then where I live an 80* day is HOT!

Have the same thing with 3 bulbs got at costco for something like 20$ CDN !! great for heat sort of like a radiant nice to have the high & low setting unaffected by cold like fluorescents but if you have sawdust flying around it will burn onto the bulbs making quite the smell but little else of concern
