I have a Rockwell wood lathe that has a 7/8 threaded arbor rather than a Morse taper. Does anyone know where I could get a drill chuck that would fit it? I've looked at lots of websites, but haven't found anyone that has one with that large of threads.

You'll have a very hard time finding one, as this is a very unusual size for threaded drill chucks. I've just checked the MSC catalog for you, and the largest threaded drill chuck they list is for 5/8". You can give them (MSC) a call, they have a 'technical services' group that might be able to help. (Believe it or not, even as big as their catalog is, not everything is listed!) Their customer support number is 1-800-753-7970. Their regular order number is 1-800-753-7270.

You might want to test your friendship with someone you know that does a little homeshop machinist work, and have an adapter made up. You may also find a machine shop willing to do this at a reasonable price. This will give you the option of selecting the chuck first, then designing the adapter to make the two match. Sometimes you can find a small used lathe chuck for a very reasonable price. Also, a lathe chuck will give you a wider range of holding capacity.

Wayne,
Thanks for the ideas--I'll give them a try.
