Does anyone have any info on 5/8" drive tools?
Snap-on and Proto still offer adapters, but no tools. I was offered a bunch of J.H. Williams, but
declined because of the overlap with the sizes I already have. Is this size a military spec? Thanks
Bill.

I have a 5/8 drive impact wrench and most of a set of sockets I got from my grandfather. I have recently found a supplier for this drive, see below. I have the adapter to use the 5/8 sockets with the 1/2 drive system I normally use. I don't think I will buy any NEW 5/8 drive sockets. I would pick up the odd one that someone doesn't want. Let me know.

Bill --

The 5/8 inch drive size was, to the best of my knowledge, a power-and-impact-only size that was aimed at the industrial user that wanted to deal with only a single drive size that spanned the upper end of the "1/2 inch application" range through the lower end of the "3/4 inch application" range. Wasn't very popular simply because the 3/4 inch drive sizes are available to span almost the whole of the 5/8 inch drive range while being more capable at the larger end. I don't think anybody is still making 5/8 drive sockets, and I wouldn't bother buying used 5/8 drive tools if they only duplicated wrench sizes I already had, but a good deal on used 5/8 drive sockets and drivers that add capability to a mechanic's tool set can sometimes be a good deal indeed. Thanks John, I was offered new old stock sockets
when I bought my last set of Protos. They were the heaviest impact sockets I've seen, and besides the fact that they would have duplicated (triplicated
too!) a lot of what I already have, the walls were
too thick for some of the stuff I get involved with.

I ended up with a new "Snap-on" 3/4" Female-5/8" Male adapter. I bought it for a buck, not knowing that 5/8" existed. If anyone wants one, "Do I have a deal for you"

I managed to acquire 4 sockets that I thought were 3/4 drive. I've been planning to get the 3/4 drive tools, too, but then I thought the hole looked a little small. Turns out it measured only 5/8. I had never heard of this before, and a web search, should this forum as the only source of ANY info so far. Don't know if this forum is still active, but I thought I'd post that I have these sockets. I might be interested in the mentioned adapter, or in selling the sockets since I haven't started my 3/4 collection yet anyway. I will have to check my toolbox to be sure, but I think I have a 1-5/16", two 1-3/8", and a 1-7/16". I was planning on making my own breaker bar with some 5/8" solid stock, but am open to options now that I know I wasn't crazy about seeing a new size.
