Recently purchased a ford 1500 4wd to help maintain our woodlot. I have become convinced that I need a 3pt logging winch and was wondering what other people might think about this. The terrain is quite hilly. It seems just about impossible to find a used 3pt winch and I am considering making one out of a truck pto winch.
I am concerned that this might be dangerous due to the difficulty of disengageing the winch under tension. Thought about driving a truck pto winch with a hydraulic motor. (I can get 8.5 gpm and 1900 lbs pressure from the tractor) Although this would prolly be safer I think it might be too slow.

I would appreciate all comments..I would also appreciate a lead on a used 3pt winch :-)

Thanks

3 pt hitches can tend to lift the front of the tractor if you dont have a bucket or weights on the front. if you build (or buy) a logging arch it will probably work better. for those who dont know a logging arch is a single axle trailer with an arch above the axle. a pully is mouted at the top of the arch the cable(usualy mounted on the tractor)is run thru the pully. if you are handleing smaller wood a traier to stack it on could be in order. other than that i would find a used skidder far sale. matt t logger in new england

Here are a couple of ideas. First, logs drag best when the butt is elevated off the ground. This keeps it from digging in. Fabricate a stout "T" for your 3 point hitch. Also fabricate an extended top link/boom. Put a chain hook on the end compatable with your logging chain. Back your tractor up to the logg butt, put the chain around the log, hook it to the boom, lift a couple of inches and drive off. Also, consider an electric winch as used on jeeps, etc. Mount on the front of your tractor and winch tractor and log together with tractor power engaged.

Now I'm no logger..... but it occurs to me that a tractor seat directly above a cable winch that's under a lot of strain is NOT a place I want to spend much time in! Sooner or later, cables break, and the ends tend to whip about. However, I suppose those more familiar with this stuff might assure me that it's a lot safer than many of the things I've done with a tractor from time to time!

On the off chance that someone might have a winch for sale I realized that I should have mentioned that we are in Northern New York, Adirondak Park

Kim---I forgot to say that the electric unit would have an remote control so you could control it off of the tractor if needed-----Jim
