Gentlemen; Not exactly sure which board to put this on. Does anybody have any experience with the new Briggs 5 hp intek OHV engine? Been looking in Northern Hyd. catalog and they show this engine at about $100 dollars less than the Honda. I need a new engine to replace the bottom of the line 5hp Briggs that is presently on the splitter. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thank You

In no way can you beat a honda engine, We have fertilizer trucks that have honda engines and pumps, and they just run forever, they start when its cold,we don't have any trouble whatsoever with them. The briggs we used to have would only last a year or two,so we were constantly buying new ones, and you can never get them started.

I don't want to comment on wich engine to use, But it sounds like you are having excessive vibration. Either engine you decide to buy, should be a cast iron model, they have much less vibration then a Aluminum block model, also if you are using a direct drive pump make sure you have the rubber grommet installed between the engine and the pump. I actually have a large log splittler with an 11 horse Briggs, and A belt driven Hydraulic Pump very little vibration with belts, also Stens (maybe Briggs also) sells an electronic Ignition Module to replace Breaker points in the briggs engines, It's two wires, easy to hook up and works well, with a proper carb tune, your briggs will start in 2 pulls.

Thanks Guys; Honda it will be. I know I hate this motor so bad that I am going to remove it from the woodsplitter with my splitting mall! I have had to rebuild or repair the starter, gas tank 3 times, and 3 different carburetors all primarily due to vibration.Muffler too many times to count. Would prefer to buy american but we do what we have to do. CB

I may be mistaken but I think Honda's motors are US built. I know their 4 wheelers are built in US.

My Honda four-wheeler says "MADE IN JAPAN" on the engine.

My Honda generator says "Made in Japan". I wish it said "Made in USA". I still like the way it starts when the thermometer is in the single digits.

Honda is what I'd use, you couldn't part me from my mower after all the Briggs I nearly had a heart attack trying to start after the first year. Honda engines are almost all US-built, also 4-wheelers, Gold Wings, all 2-door Accords for world market, and all Civics are US or Canadian-made. Hell, they're more American than a Taiwan-built Chrysler or a Mexican Ford !

Northern Tool and Equipment Co. has 5 hp Honda OHC engine Mod # GC 160QHA, item # 60594-C146 on sale for $199.99. There phone # is 1-800-533-5545. This is listed in their 2000 spring Master Catalog. May be hard to beat this price. Good luck, Gordon

Go Honda. We run them on all our mixers and generators. They will run forever on a tank of gas, a factor to consider when you have to refuel a hot engine. The only parts I recall buying are for the Briggs engines we still have and have not changed over yet. IMHO

I don't know if this helps, but I just finished sleeving a briggs engine. The owner was complaining about the cilinder wall being just the cast alum. and wearing out too soon. I believe that if you build an engine yourself you would be more satisified. Neal

Honda will make a fool out of a Briggs anyday. Have ahde two hondas for about ten years. Never had trouble. Have had numerous Briggs over those same 10 years. Burns about 3 times as much gas as Honda. You will never need parts for the honda so don't worry about the cost of parts. The extra cost for the honda you will same that in gas alone in the first year if you run it much. Briggs are good motors if you don't use it but a little. The most I have ever got out of Briggs was 6 years. Usede about 100 hours a year. Something to think about is our briggs have troubles when they get bouncesd around a lot. Going down gravel roads justs eats them up somehow. The honda will stand up to the abuse.

I'll 2nd that.
I've got 5hp Honda and Briggs on water pumps here. The Honda's will out last the Briggs at least 2 to 1 and the gas bill will more than pay the difference in heavy useage.
