Poison Ivy Killer

Any good ideas on how to kill poison ivy and a lot of it? It is wrapped around trees and everything else in a woodline I am attempting to clear. My 2 boys are EXTREMELY allergic and it has to go.

As others said burning it can be deadly. I got caught driving thru smoke one time. I was gasping for air within 10 miles. Had seen poison ivy where the burn pile was. Ended up getting to my Dr and he gave me some shot to offset the poison. I got lucky.

What ever you do dont burn with your boys anywheres near if they breathe the smoke in it could get in their lungs and be very bad..happend to my br. in law. hospitalized a month..

I use roundup to kill it, spray out the green stuff, 1st, then I use a pole saw to cut about an 18" section out of the vine. Then pour about an ounce of pure RU on the stump. Don;t waste that section, put on rubber gloves, and carve a spoon out of it, for your mother-in-law! You will chuckle, every time she opens her yap!

If you do get the poison ivy killed then clear the brush line, what ever you do DO NOT BURN ANY OF IT..!!!!

The smoke will carry the oil from the poison ivy where ever the it travels and a person can get it worse from the smoke than if they touch the plant itself. Just giving you some pointers...

I think it is one tablespoon of salt in a gal of vinegar as a weed killer. If you put it on to heavy you will not get any thing else to grow there for awhile.

I use "Roundup-Tough Brush and Poison Killer"
in a Wisconsin State Natural Area. It Does a good job, but Poisin Ivy keeps popping up in different
areas, perhaps carried by birds in bird poop ?
In some places it"s climbing trees,as vines,some
almost an inch thick! I cut it, wearing rubber gloves, and apply "Tordon" to the stub. the vines,
climbing the tree have died, so far.

We had a fool in our office who was told to pee on it. He got too close and you can guess what misery he was in for a couple of weeks.

I used poison ivy/brush killer made by roundup. It worked good, but I think that if you use some diesel fuel in the mix it helps it out.

If you are not alergic, cut the stalk and paint the bottom half with undiluted ortho brush-be-gone or 24D using a paint brush. You will have to despose of the cut vines, they will still be active for sometime. Like others said don"t burn it. I was not alergic to it until I got in smoke where it was burning.

I"ve had good luck with ortho brush killer and roundup BUT you must mix the roundup at the strongest concentration (on label i think it was about 3x the regular dose).

Havn"t dealt with vine/trees.

I am finding it in trees as big as my wrist. To kill it I cut a section out of ALL of the vines. Just a cut it will grow back together. Then keep it cut and it will die. If you choose to burn it STAY OUT OF THE SMOKE. If you don't the rash will be in your lungs.

The Ortho brush killer . Round up does not work that well. The vines can be cut with a machete and sprayed into but it is best to do below freezing. All parts of the plant will get you even the roots. It takes about three seasons of treatment to be rid of it. I have sprayed up a tree and only the sprayed areas died . Even when the vines were cut it seemed to be getting nutrition right off the tree bark and still living up higher on the willow tree. Tell your boys what it looks like and educate them to the poison oak and Zumac too . Last one that got me was the Poison Zumac[Sumac].
Wash up with tecnu when your done to kill any oil that got on you and any tools. It is nasty stuff.

If it is in the trees it will be tough to get down. When it is vining on things I take a hatchet and cut the vine close to the ground and then use plenty of gasoline and diesel mixed together on that stump. I wait until winter when it is just the vine and pull it down with an old pair or gloves and then pitch the gloves. I am very allergic but haven't had it in about 20 years. The last time I just about ended up in the hospital.

I've also had good success with the sprays that are specifically for it but a also mix it at least double of the directions. Check a good garden center for the spray.

i mix 41% glyphosate with amine 400 2-4d in a pump sprayer, add a squirt of dish soap. about 8 oz of each with water. does a good job of burndown. for the vines in the trees, i cut them off about 4 ft up the tree and stick the ends in a plastic bottle (water bottles with the tops cut off work good) of the mix for a couple days.

24D if you can still get it. Whatever you do, don't burn the poison ivy. Your boys could die if they inhale the smoke.

Old school way is simple table salt. Plus it dries up the oils that cause the problem also
