John Deere 1020 Question

I just purchased a JD 1020 tractor with
a front loader/bucket attachment. I'm trying
to figure out (a) what year it is, and (b)
if I got a good deal. It cost $5,600 and
it has 792 total hours on the dial. It was
used very little over the years from the
previous owner. Everything works but what
I'm really intersted in is finding out where
the serial number/model number is. The only
numbers I could find were on a metal tab
about 1 foot below the seat on the frame.
It said TYPE T4H3C MODEL 03736IT. Does
that shed any light on the tractor?

Any info on the JD 1020 tractor would be
wonderful. It's my first and will be used
around the lot to push things around to get
ready for a home construction project.

Thanks,

John,

Steamer is right. The metal tag should be on the right side of the transmission case above the running board in full view. The number that you posted is unfamiliar to me. You have a very good tractor. You'll love the power steering, wet hydraulic brakes, the weight, and the torque of the 3 cylinder engine.

Your tractor is identical to the 1520 and 2020 from the bell housing rearward so your transmission and axle is robust enough to handle the higher HP of the 1520 and 2020.

Mine is has a serial number of about 132,000 which is around a 1972/3. It is actually an industrial 301 but the only difference is that mine was orginally yellow and has the heavy duty front axle for loader work. This tractor was the base tractor for the backhoe units. Mine came without a PTO and 3 point hitch which I added and was no small task.

The serial numbering system that JD uses includes several models which accounts for the high serial numbers.

Good luck with your JD.

I had the chance to buy a clean 1020 for $4500, yet didn't. It has 8000 hours. Is that a good price?

The serial number is on the JD mfg plate on the side of either the engine ot the transmission housing. If you find the number, I can consult a reference to determine the year of mfg...

I wish I could find one like that.....
