Mornin' All,

Ran my 686 for 10 solid hours yesterday. Started at 7am moving hay bales with the sled intil noon and then cut hay all afternoon.

Darned thing still didn't use a quarter tank of fuel all day long. Think I'll start using it as my "daily driver" and leave the Powerstroke parked. :>)

I remember driving a 1070 case and being able to mow hay for 4-5 days on a single tank .

Allan how far out in NE are you? If they'll fit I'll trade in rims and 16.9x38s off my 856 for your 18.4x38s.

Hey Allan , Looks like you have a better stand of hay in this field . I`ve got that same eng. in my 706 and ya really have to spend some time in the seat to run a tank full in the hay field . Cut about 10 a. today that was about a waste of time and fuel but every bale counts in the winter !! It`s in the middle of about 80 a. of woods and rough pasture the cows will be on next week . I usually dont turn`em in there till fall but things are drying up around here so I`m opening the gate .

I've got a 706 gas and the fuel delivery truck wears out a set of tires every year bringing fuel out to that hog.

I've always dreamed of dropping a 4bt Cummins in an M to get better fuel efficiency... Our 544 is pretty easy on the gasoline, but the tax break on diesel is nicer. Thinking I may rake with the 1256 this year, shift up and throttle down will probably equal the 544 for efficiency.

Your 686 has the German diesel, correct? Friend of mine had a hydro 86 w/German that was pretty decent on the fuel for being a hydro.

My Daughter and granddaughter and my Name sake ( Layton Walter Gage Hoffman) live in Chadron, NE how close are you to there.

They used to live in Alliance thats pretty flat country.

Say Allan, what type of shift set up does the 686 have, I am familiar with the 986 and 1086, and 14 ,1556, but I have never been on a 686, kinda looks from the pic it has a 56 type shift set up. Dont see many of them around here. Never see one for sale.

Yeah,

It's just that same old Farmall 5-speed up on the cowl.

656, 666 and 686 were all pretty much the same darned tractor.

Don't know which engineer had the bright idea of putting 18.4 X 38 tires on this size of tractor. Really makes that 4th gear kinda useless as it is just too darned fast.

One heck of a nice tractor except for that one boo-boo. :>(

A couple weeks ago at a hay equipment field day they were running a windrow merger on a 686 sitting on 16.9x38 Firestones and it looked pretty good on those tires with five sets of wheel weights inside. When I got to looking at it a little closer it had a pyrometer on the dash and a turbo under the hood but it had no turbo decals and you couldn't hear the turbo when it was running. In a tractor that light I bet that D-312 with the turbo is a pretty snappy engine.

Cliff, the D 312 is pretty snappy without a turbo. I would suspect it is plum hot with one. I think Allen's has the German D310 in it. The 312 is very easy on fuel as well. And easy to start. I run 16.9X 38s on my 666.

Don't think the tank holds 35 gallon.

Tree lives over on the other 80. I've noticed that it's kind of a camera hog too. :>)
