I am wondering how I can tell if my starting valves are closing all the way when I am running my WD-9 on Diesel. It acts like it is missing on one cylinder. Could it be an injector? How can I check. I know it isn't the fuel pump. It is the front cylinder closest to the radiator. I don't think I have any air in the system. I have bleed it a couple times. Seems to get better as the tractor warms up. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Maestro

The number one cylinder, or the cylinder that the injector isn"t fire all the time has a compression blow when I do what you suggested. I checked the others and they are OK. Now what would you suggest. I know on my super WD-6 I had some issues with the starter valves but when I took off the valve cover and hit them with a hammer and a piece of Oak board they began to work fine. Can one tighten the valve on that cylinder to help it fire. When it ran on the diesel side today it acted like it was firing some of the time. I let it run for some time and the longer it ran the better it seemed to get. Any more suggestions would be great. This is helping a great deal. Thanks, maestro

The idea of pulling the #1 plug and cranking it on diesel is OK except they usually won't crank on diesel mode. I would start it and switch to diesel mode. Then let it idle and remove #1 plug to see if it was getting past the starting valve. If it was quiet their, I would look to low compression on that cylinder. JimN

It will crank on Diesel, I did it accidently yesterday. Might be a different story with a fresh engine, the ones I have owned or operated were far from fresh. Pulling the plug when it is running is cool too but if the valve IS stuck open it will be a lot more obnoxious. If the valve is open it will spin that cylinder over real easy anyway. We had a TD-6 that would start on Diesel if you stalled it when it was good and hot.

You can take your spark plugs out and crank the engine over on the Diesel side, if one is leaking it will be blowing compression out of the plug hole.

I suppose it could be either. Equally(?) it could be low compression on that cylinder - for a number of other reasons - piston rings, valve clearances, burned valves. You can check the injector by moving it to another cylinder and noting if the fault stays with the cylinder or moves with the injector.

I just did that. The issue stays with the number one cylinder so that is why I am now wondering more about the starting valves. Your thoughts?

Well, they can easily be distorted by stopping while too hot. You can do a compression test on the gas set-up. That may tell you if it is rings (by doing a dry and wet test)or valves. Do a compressed air test and simply listen for the leakage (unless it is enough to hear or feel through the spark plug hole without the compressed air). If it is not the piston and not the running valves....it must be the diesel running valve - or its seat ie. a cracked head. Btw I don"t have a dual fuelled engine, just considering the alternatives and how to reduce the guess-work and narrow down the diagnosis.
