Ouch! What a heartbreaker.

Had to start haying my wheat today. Just like a rookie, I got it planted too thick and it just plain ran out of gas the last couple of days.

So, hay it or loose it, I guess.

Boy! $5 wheat makes that smart just a little. :>(

Allan,
Sorry to see that happening, but it's real common with new ground. One of my neighbors broke up some CRP last year and it looked unbelievable early with what moisture we had but when the moisture quti it went south fast-I mean literally over night. Dry land wheat and "hot" ground are poor combination with out the moisture. I usually plant 55-57 lbs. w/14" drill. Have a quarter of CRP that comes out in 2 years, good land so may break it out-kinda dreading it cause of what your goin thru. Just keep up the ole farmers creed-"Oh well, there's always next year".

Yeah,

I knew it was going to be hot ground to start with.

Just like you said, looked like a million bucks early on and everyone was saying how good it looked. I took it with a grain of salt because I know this country. When she decides to dry up, it will do it overnight.

It is just a price to pay because of "where we live". :>)

Not to rub salt in the wound but I see wheat's at 5.30 right now. Course it's only worth that when ya dump it in the elevator, lotsa time between now and then.

Allan, How much NH3 did you put down when you put that wheat crop in? I have to agree with Steven@AZ on this one. Haveing seen thin crops make it to harvest, but fertlizer (NH3) just enables wheat to better use short water situations, and when moisture is in abundance then the wheat crop is even better. I would think that 70 lbs of N / acre would have been a good starting point. On High Plains summer fallow wheat ground.
I know fertlizer is not new, or novel, But a lot of people in thhe High Plains tend to view Fertlizer as something for a primary crop not something to put on Blow Hills, dry corners, and the like. But I am sure you allredy knew this.
Later,
John A.

90 lbs of seed wheat on alfalfa ground? What were you thinking? I have seen thin wheat burn up on old alfalfa ground. Man that is tough harvesting wheat with a mower, but that is the best of a bad deal.

You still got too much "farmer" in you Allan. It never bothers me to cut feed. What bothers me is leaving that nice 60 bu wheat to ripen taking a chance loosing it all in a storm when it would have made realy nice hay a week or two ago.

What ran out of gas?? The tractor or the wheat??
Seriously, what's the whole story?? Looks like the stalks were just starting to yellow up a bit. Did it fail to produce mature head of wheat and started to ripen the stalk?? Looks like wheat is lush green, so will it be chopped off for wheatlage, as they say, or baled?? Seems like it would take along time to dry it for baling.

I've seen worse wheat make it through to harvest... unless it wasn't filling anything in the heads.

How thick did you plant? We put down 1-3/4 bushels/acre with the air seeder, many people seed 2 bushels/acre.

Some of Dad's wheat is in trouble of drowning out... leaving some deep ruts trying to spray it, too.

At least it is sounding like we will have a nice hay crop, but constant rain will make that a PITA as well.

Hi Steve,

I've lived in your area; you are way wetter up there than we are here.

Anything over about 64lbs is just about asking for a failure, but I thought I could "get lucky" this first year out of the box. I planted 90 lbs on prior alfalfa ground. Ever hear of anything so darned dumb? :>)

Naw, it started firing yesterday and actually, looks way worse than the pictues show. Some of it stopped even before it headed out.

I lost er'; no doubt about it. :>)

Allan,

Did the dry weather or the recent frost you mentioned do it in?

No, it was me.

I've always "pushed" the ground and thought I might get "lucky". Planted way, way too thick for dryland wheat. Got on 90 lbs of seed per acre when it should have been 60 lbs or there abouts. Lot of guys plant 45 lbs.

If it would have been irrigated, it would have made 70-80 bushel? Just cannot crowd this dryland ground tho. I knew that too, but thought I could "get away" with it. :>)

Oh well, I needed more hay; I sure got it now--in spades. Evenso, pulling that sickel into that field this morning was kind of tough to do. :>(

Don't forget to test your hay for nitrates - a real cattle killer! We've always been able to get by feeding about 1/4 to 1/3 wheat hay with other good grass/alfalfa mix making up the balance.
