I read on a picture of the industrial W9 International tractor picture comments on this site that someone has a W9 International with a 471 Detroit engine on it. Are many of these out there? And are there any W40 models with these engines out there? Thanks.

I have literature from Detroit Diesal that shows coversions in Ms and F30s and tells about W6s and 2236s It shows how to put a Detroit in the M and F30 and LA Case. It shows pictures of a Detroit in a unstyled Oliver 99 and a G Moline. A W40 chasis is about the same as a 2236 so it shouldn't be to hard to install. I have a WK40 that has a 450 Red Diamond engine in it. They bolt right in and really liven them up. There was a W9 for sale awhile back in Texas that had a 4/71 in it. Bill

I heard something about the "Red Diamond" engine somewhere onetime, but what exactly are they?

Red Diamond engines are International truck engines from the 50s

I believe they were a Continental engine- I remember my dad talking about Blue Diamond, Green Diamond, etc.- the different sizes were denoted by colors. Can't tell you which is which, however.

To my knowledge, the red diamond engines were IH trick. There might be some confusion to the color game though. The blue ones were blue seal engines made by continental engine, which were valve in block. Don't know where the green comes in except that detroit diesel engines were green for years, in most applications. My experience.

continental also made engines known as "red seal" engines. Got a flathead six one on our sawmill at the farm . takes a big log going thru that old circular mill to phase the old girl.
