Cub Cadet 1641 won't cut

I have a 1995 Cub Cadet 1641 tractor that is not doing the job for me. I use it to cut about 1 acre of grass once or twice a week. The problem is that the mower deck is forever clogging up. I need to clean out under the deck after every mow. If I try to cut thicker bladed grass like buckgrass or quackgrass, forget it, it will just clog up. I've tried lowering the rear deck wheels, so the front of the blade it higher than the rear. That did help a little, but the cut looked horrid. Any thoughts as to what might be causing this? I should note that I have the 48" deck with the 16 HP engine. I'm wondering if it's underpowered.

Mike,
Yes, the front of the mower needs to be lower than the back, the blade cuts the grass once and it's gone the back of the blade coast over the cut area. With the back lower the front cuts once then tries to recut as the blade passes, a lot of drag on the blade.
Belts need to be good and tight.
I had a problem with cloging on my 18 HP Sears tractor until I painted the underside of the mower deck with the graphite coating they use on grain bins and silage chutes. It solved the problem. I also use it on snow plow blades with good results.
Hope this helps.
Dick

Mike, All of the other postings are good, but you may want check the engine RPMs. If you can find someone with a photo tach you could check the engine rpms against the spindle pulley speed to see if the belt is slipping also. The engine should run at 3600 RPMs no-load. You definetley want the front of the deck lower-read your owners manual, it tells you how to level the deck.

I don't think you said if the machine has always done a poor job, or is this something that has just started? Wondering if you changed blades and now have mulching blades. The mulching type blades sure won't handle tall grass as well as regular blades./ Good Luck H. L.

Mike, What speed are you running the engine when mowing? You should be at full throttle, or very close to it. (I did a service call on a combine one time that the owner complained about the poor efficieny of the NEW machine, and he was running the engine at half throttle.) Also be sure to readjust the front of the blade lower, (mower power requirement will be lower to run.) Like stated in other posts, be sure belts and pulleys are in good shape, and underside of mower is clean and blades are sharp and correct blades are installed. Happy holidays.

JK, am I to understand that mower blade needs to be lower in the front than in the rear? I tried putting the rear lower, and it cut real ugly. Also, I always mow at full throttle.

Thanks, Mike

First, be shure to keep your blades sharp. Second, scrap and then hose off the underside of your deck. It may take o few times hosing it off but it needs to be clean. Last, you should spray regular engine oil on the deck. Re-apply oil once a month or as needed. This has worked for me. If you wait until the grass is dry (no morning dew or moisture from rain) you may find that it will not clog up at all. Good Luck! Shark

I mow with a 47" deck on an old 10 hp JD 112. It always mows though I some times clog it if I've not mowed often enough and have let the grass go to seed. Downed tree limbs up to an inch I just chop with the mower. Sharp blades help. If I'm only lowering the grass 3 or 4 inches I can mow as fast as the deck will ride without bouncing too bad.

My blades are sharp, and I've tried mowing slow. I still get a build-up of grass under the deck. I have a 21" Craftsman pusher that will mow through more that my 1641. Would a worn deck belt cause a problem like this?

Yes, or a drive belt, or both. You're trying to put maybe 10 hp through a single belt. Needs to be a good one with unworn pulleys.

I know this sounds dumb but swipe the PAM from the wifes kitchen cabinet, scrape the underside of the mower deck CLEAD, Use wire brush if you have to but get it clean, then spray the PAM on it, mine works great with a 14.5 HP LTD with42" deck. You have to have good tight belts tho.

Thanks for the replies on my 1641 cutting poorly. I have a feeling that my problem is twofold. I think I need to level my mower deck. The deck clogs up with very fine clippings. I may also need to replace the belt. It is the original, and it's been 3 years. Thanks again, Mike
