I've recently found a JD 1010 diesel Crawler in a neighbors shed that hasn't run for ten years. the left final drive is removed and hanging from the rafter. I checked for antifreeze and it was OK. I've done a little research on the Dubuque engine that was in these crawlers and learned that it was sort of a lemon. Bottom line... is it worth $1000?

If the undercarriage is ok, and everything else is intact, it would bring $2000-3000 as a parts machine. The final drives will cost $500-900 depending on who you get it from (if it needs replaced). Does it have wet clutches? The dry clutches are a bit of a pain and can be costly. If it has been sitting that long, I'd worry that the pins in the tracks might be frozen in several places also. All these things are costly to repair, and they aren't that powerful in the first place, so depending on what you are planning on using it on, you might be disappointed on the outcome if you get it...

The clutches are dry, I hope that rust isn't a problem The bucket was still shiny bare steel, not rusted. What do you know about the Dubuque powerplant???

No, I'm not familiar with that plant. My experience has been mostly with the JD 440 which is the 1010's older brother. The dry clutches could run you another several hundred dollars to fix. They didn't take to kindly to sitting and would fuse into a solid mass. If the final drive is off the one side, then checking that clutch would be quite easy. I would tend to be scared of this machine, just from my experiences for what that's worth...

Thank you Dennis for your advice, I'll probably try to negotiate a little on the asking price. This thing hasn't been advertised so its not like theres a lot of competition. Also I am employed at a JD dealership and can get all my parts at cost and have the use of the service vehicles for transport. I basically thought that if I could get this thing running for a little money then I might be able to put in a pond and do some other work on my acreage then sell it and get all or most of my money and labor back. Thanks again B.
