Here's the sitch, need some suggestions/advice.

My wife's parents have both passed away. My father-in-law collected anything and everything. In our possession, we now have three old tractors that he obtained.

One of the machines is an Allis-Chalmers. It's clearly identified on the engine hood. Where should I look for additional information? Is there a plate that would contain series information?

There are two others that look similar to an old Farmall Cub my grandpa had. They are ref and one has the steering column to the right side. Again, where should I look for information on the machine?

We live near Fayetteville, NC. Does anyone know any experts in the area that might be interested in taking a look at these?

Thanks!

Just curious, as I may well find myself in the same spot some day....but what kind of a bite does ol' Uncle Sam take out of you for inheriting those tractors, etc?

Well, I haven't gotten that far yet, Kevin. There's an estate tax that we'll have to pay when we settle the estate. I think it's 40 cents on $100 here in NC.

Unless the estate is worth a million or two, from what I've read, there's no federal tax involved. And we aren't anywhere close to that. The ceiling has been rising every year for the past several years and the law will change in 2010. No matter what though, the whole sitch is a major pain in the arse.

A few more questions. in reply to THaire, 06-14-2007 10:14:11
Thanks for the info, guys.

Are there any websites that might offer me more info on these tractors? Will the serial numbers help determine the age? What's the best way to research them?

I'm sure we'll sell them eventually. I would love to get involved with restoring one or more of them them but it's just not possible. The situation is such that it'll take us years just to sort through all the things they've "collected." We're not looking to make a mint but we certainly want a fair price. What's the best way to determine their value?

Thanks again for all the information.

The Farmall is a Super A. I am not sure about the little Allis.

Your Allis B looks like it has the adjustable front axle, which is not very common. The rear wheels are also the type which would be furnished with the adjustable front axle, so it probably was built that way. Makes it a little more valuable.

All the later B's had that type of front axle. Not uncommon at all. The early ones had the arched front axle. The adjustable arched front axle is hard to find.

The serial # on your D-10 will be located where the engine meets the torque tube, on the left (carb) side. You might want to scratch off any accumulated crud from this area. If the tractor is sitting level, the numbers will be stamped on the transmission housing, about 45 degrees off level. If you think of the transmission housing as a octagon, the location is going to be on the upper diagonal, left side.

My guesses, D 10(that one was easy). The D 10 is worth a pretty penny. The 2nd one I think is a A Farmall and the 3rd one I believe is a Allis Chalmers B

On the Allis, look in the area adjacent to the shift lever. Some models will have numbers and letters stamped there. Post those exactly as they appear on the tractor. On the Farmalls, look near the steering box and under the seat for a serial number plate.

Thanks BD. I took some pictures and will post them shortly.

There's an Allis Chalmers D10. That number is clear.

I believe there's another Allis but we couldn't find a number and didn't know where to look on the one that I believe is a Farmall.

The unidentified Allis has a handcrank on the front. It will turn, which I would assume means the motor is not froze up.

The other Allis looks to be a Model B. The ID will be at the shift lever base, I guarantee it. Not a plate but part of the casting. If you have not found it, more cleaning is necessary.

Thanks Mike. I thought about that as I was posting. I'll grab my digital camera and take some this afternoon.
