This is for all you non-believers who question the accuracy of the Dodge fuel mileage computer (See previous page).
All miles below from my Atlas

Getting to Colo Springs----- ----- ----- 60 miles
Co Springs to Burlington CO----- ----- -151
Burlington to Goodland, KS----- ----- ---30
Gld to KC (where I refueled)----- ----- 400

Total miles according to my HP41---641
Divided by 28.3 gal= 22.65

I think that the inaccuracies in the mileage computers may be in the gage itself. It is probably analog while all else is digital. I try to run my fuel as low as practical before refueling to try to average out the errors in the gage.

My dad had an olds 98 with one of those on board mileage computers and he also checked it the old fashion way and it was accurate. FWIW ?

Now the actual driven milage will be different than your Rand McNally miles. Your sounding like a dispatcher now. I drive for a living and the book almost never match the driven entrance &exit ramps clover leafs stopping to walk around, eat and any other stops all add to the difference. Just a clover leaf ramp will add a 1/4 mile then the fuel stop is off the road all adds up would expect to see the mileage drop to about 20mpg driven.

You are suggesting that the actual driven miles would be greater than the atlas.

That would make his calculated mpg higher, not lower.

oh yeah, those numbers change when you get someone who thinks the gas pedal is an 'on' switch and the brakes are an 'off' switch.

the most fuel efficient car today is not so efficient when you get a lead foot. Talk about cutting that mileage in HALF.

I think every one is over looking the importance of the driver here. Keeping speed resonable, not gunning on take off etc. I once, on a long distance trip, saw a 4 MPG change when we shifted drivers to a lead footed fellow.

Dodge must"ve made a few mileage-related improvements. My 2001 Ram 2500 2wd diesel runs an average of 540-560 miles on 29-30 gallons. I think the automatic accounts for a little loss, but my wife refuses to learn to drive a standard. All in all, I"m very impressed. Never again will I own a fuel-guzzling power stroke.

My 1996 power stroke has alway's got 20 mpg running empty. It is a different story with a trailer loaded though, cuts it almost in half.
