I need a larger (heavier) tractor for haying (square baler with kicker)and for tilling. I am looking at an 886 International with cab for $8,500. The tractor has 5500 hours, TA, 540/1000 PTO, 360 engine, and is in reasonably good shape (starts well and does not burn oil). The tractor is currrently having the reverse gear replaced which is about a $2,500 repair job with parts. The cab has heat but no air and I realy wanted air becouse of the heat in my location (virginia). I figure with air and transportation I will have around $10,500 invested in this tractor. Does this sound like a good investment? Also, if anyone can help with reducing the price of the air install,i.e. know of after market air conditioning systems or has any suggestions I would appreciate it. Note: I realy like IH tractors and I have a good dealer in my location.

Do your self a favor STAY AWAY from any IH tractor with the 360 CID Engine they are JUNK. The engine is used in the 766 tractors, Do you like Noise and do you want engine Repair Bills? I know of two of these tractors with this engine, these tractors were bought new by each of the owners, they are both good care takers of there equipment, the one broke the Crankshaft at 4200 Hrs[ cost around $6000 to fix] the other one had Anti-frese in the oil back in 1988 and just did it again last fall.these two have had more truble with them than any of the other tractors around town in this tractor size.If you are going to buy this tractor Try To find some one that has one, check it out to see if you like where the controls are located, this is a big complant on the 86 tractors, the best is [Tripping over the Park Lever trying to get out of the left door]. Good luck with your chice??

Did the 886 ever have air on it? It it has the brackets, evaporator, and condensor you can add a compressor, hoses, and a 134a charge for under $500. A lot of people are making a mint on "upgrading" systems to 134a and selling compressors. Eg: York piston compressors whsle $108, suitable for R134a or R12, plus clutches. These were the actual compressors on a host of tractors.

Price depends on local market. In the corn and wheat belt I agree with the others, that's a litle much. In the KY, VA, TN area 10,500's cheap. Since Jan I've seen a 986 and 2 886's at auction, all needed a/c work but had all components 10,500 (986); 12,100 and 14,000 on the 886's.

Where did the 86 get the bad name my brother had a 79 1086 145HP 8000 hrs. when he went to the field he went to work the first 500 hrs 1000 gallon fuel no way would that tractor burn 8 gallon an hour under heavy load I like to see a 66 or 56 do that that is better than 18 horse per gallon hour

for 10,500 I think you are on the high end of range for an 886.Have you run an 86 series before? Going away from the black stripe 66 series put IH out of buisness, the 86 was a poor substitute/replacement. If you are patient, you could find a nice 1066 w/ fewer hrs for the same money. Mike in NY

I think $10,500 would be high for an 886 (not that they aren't a good tractor) unless it is in mint condition. For a couple thousand more you could get a 5088 which would be a much better tractor.

A 5088?? Well, yes it's a better tractor all right, but at a "factory" rating of 136.1 pto hp from that 436cid turbo engine, it's actually quite a LOT more tractor than the 90.5pto hp, 358 cid 886. You should have suggested the 3288 instead---it was the same size as the 886 (90.5 rated hp)! (Isn't the 3288 a whole lot more difficult to find than a 5088, however?)

The 3288 is basicly a 886 with a different paint job. The 5088 is totally different, it has a wet clutch with syncronized transmission and an actual power shift instead of a TA which is why I reccremended it.
