are there any differences in cost of upkeep between a water cooled engine and a air cooled engine? i was looking at this agco allis 5650 47hp diesel tractor with an air cooled engine. it was a very fine machine but wondered if it will have any problems other than normal wear and tear.

As a teen I spent some time operating a Deutz DX160 and fell in love with the aircooled motor. you could pull the guts out of her all day then stop and pull the dipstick and lay it on your arm.try that with any water cooled motor you like.like everyone says it just eliminates some of your problems and while I've never like everything the germans desigened you can never accuse them poor enginering or underbuilding anything.and it sounds like agco didn't mess the motor up yet

The Agco Allis' are NOT powered with Deutz engines, if that's what you are alludeing to???

The Agco Allis air/oil cooled engines and tractors were built by SLH in Italy. (SAME) I like the injection system better on my SLH tractor than the one on the Deutz. As i said, my Agco's have been good to me. Robert

Hi Tod, Yes, there "is" a cost difference between an air/oil cooled Diesel and a water cooled diesel, and it is, that the air/oil cooled engine will cost you LESS to own! When the tractor gets more hours on it, you won't have to worry about leaky failing water pumps and radiators, radiator hoses, cold corosion, rotting/leaking cyclinder liners, and many more water related problems! Cleaning the fins on the cyclinders is easier than blowing out a radiator too, and they are all so harder to plug up. I've yet to find mine any where near plugged!

My Agco Allis 5660 (same engine as 5650 but with more power) starts easily in any weather and NEVER over heats, and has very good low end torque. The only negative i can think of, is the extra noise you hear from the engine because of the lack of a water jacket.

I have two air/oil cooled Agco's and they have been great tractors that i haven't had any down time with to date.

They could be had with either a 12 speed or a 16 speed. My friend has the 12, and i have the 16. He likes the gearing of the 16 speed better, and so do i. Robert

I have a Deutz 4006D, great tractor. Like Bernard says, pull off the ducts and blow out the cylinders with the air hose once in a while and make sure your fan belt is in good condition.

Steve is right, air can't freeze. The aircooled Diesels, like Eicher, Deutz or also the older Same
need a little more fuel like the watercooled.
Time by Time You have to look for the cylinder-rips, to remove dirt by blowing out.
Aircooled engines can't overheat. You have to prove the cylinder, which is farest from the Fan, the air is not so clear there, cause it has cooled the first cylinders. Best is the Eicher-Diesel, who had a fan for every cylinder. Also You have to prove the Fan-Belt time by time.

TOD,

20 some million Volkswagen bug owners past and present might tell you there's no problem with an air cooled engine. Another million or two might say there is.

Least you'll never have to buy anti freeze or replace radiator hoses.

Steve
