I was looking at an old Farm Show mag this morning and saw tractors that were two complete tractors side by side on 4 wheels. It said Oliver built these factory but there was a couple of 8N a guy did on his own. Any known pics of these or has anyone else saw them? It said at the Oliver show, they put one tranny in reverse and one forward and just let the thing run circles on the floor by itself.

They look like an early concept to increase horsepower, similar to the tandem tractors idea (two tractors hooked front to back)???

If you can believe this, Caterpillar used to build a machine that was two D-9s hooked together. I can't remember if they were connected side by side or front to back, but I did see a very old parts book for one when I worked for a Cat dealer. They called it a Dual 9. One of the technicians I worked with had been working on Cats when the interstate came through Nebraska, and he followed it basically across the whole state, working on iron. He once told me that one of the outfits had two Dual 9s hooked together, and they called it a Quad 9. Sounds pretty impressive, but I'll be they were a monster to operate.

I remember seeing a Cat brochure probably 30 years ago (and it was an old brochure then) that showed the two cats hooked front to back like in the picture, and also 2 D-9's side by side, sharing the middle track. They shared a single big blade that looked to be about 8' high and 30' wide. Landfill use or reclaiming strip mines, probably.
Funny how you remember things. I remember that the brochure said you could get these configurations with either D-9's or D-8's, and I thought that was pretty stupid -- anyone who needed something that big probably wouldn't want D-8's.

Incredible pic, Robert! I never expected to ever see even a Dual 9, let alone the Quad 9. Figuring about 60,000 - 70,000 lbs of drawbar pull (or push in this case, lol) per D-9, they shouldn't have to work to hard to load that pan. I think you could pretty much hook onto anything you wanted and move it anywhere you wanted to put it. Thanks for posting the pic.

Here is a picture of a old L Case that we had about a year ago. I sold it on Ebay. I dont recall ever seeing any factory built models as you describe. Harry Lee of Elnora In has a large IH collecrion along with about 10 homemade models, Most of the hold made ones have more than one engine. I remeber he has a F-30 with 3 F-30 motors.

The latest Red Power magazine has one the cover. I think it is a pair of Farmall 400's next to each other. It was made commercially by a company called Garret. It has some huge wheels on it. Neat article in the magazine about the tractor. -BTD

That one lived just down the road from me for many years, sat just outside the Garrett Skidder dealer for decades until it was sold last year. Broke my heart when I drove past and it was gone.

Big Fred, that tractor was sold to an 80-year-old retired gentleman in the Midwest. He wanted to buy it for years, and it finally became available. It weighs almost 16,000 pounds! It was at last weekend's Red Power Roundup.

It was featured on the cover of the most recent edition of Red Power Magazine, along with a great article.

Someone posted a picture, some time ago, of a triple Farmall A on the farmall forum. It was a handbuilt work of art. I'm sure if you were interested in the picture if you asked on the farmall forum you could get a copy.

Keith, if you look to the left of the page, Tractor Photos, and search double tractors, you'll see a few pictures, even a triple F-20, Farmers started doing this over 50 years ago, just to get more horsepower, and still only tie up one operator. Had to be an ungainly handful in the field though. Maintenance had to be fun with things sandwiched in like that too. John in Nebr.

nothing under "double" or "triple" must be named different.

I think it was possibly in Tractor Tales, meaning you couldn't search for it. Also, I think it was called an F-60.

I have an old Euclid Toy/Metal that is a dozer, side by side. Apparently, they had twin eng. & trans. etc. I don't know much about them. I thought this toy was neat. Found it under an old barn when I bought the place.

Buckwheat - The real thing (side-by-side Euclid power units on a single pair of tracks) sat under a lean-to shed on a farm near us for many years. Don't know much about it except it had twin Detroit 6-71 diesels, the radiators were positioned in back behind the operator, and it carried a bulldozer blade about 15' wide. It disappeared a couple years ago - would like to have seen how it was transported outta there!!

There was one of those in the movie "Lilies of the Field" with Sidney Poitier. Great movie, but my wife thought I was nuts when I yelled "what kinda tractor is that!" when I saw it.
